This is a off-the-wall guesstamate, Sounds like the inside of the second gear assembly is loose and riding on the tops of the gears. Grinding on a transmission is very bad news, and your time is limited. Get thee to a junk-yard and swap it out fast. They ain't that hard to swap out, half a day by yourself. Or grab a case of beer and get your buddies to make it happen in about 2 hours.
