Parking Brake Freezing

Just curious if anyone has run into this issue.

As of a few days ago (after washing the car and using brake cleaner) my parking brake has been sticking after sitting outside all night in the below freezing weather.

The handbrake lifts up with no effort to a certain point (lets say 4-5" for example) then starts to click. After backing out and driving a bit it seems to come off.

So my questions are these:

1) Have you had this problem? How did you solve it?
2) Damage due to driving with the brake on for a bit until it heats up and comes off?
3) How does the parking brake work on our cars (cable or hydraulic....haven't looked this up yet)?

Thanks,
Danny

Thanks for the TSB info. I'll add it to "the list" I have when I bring my car in.

This just happened to me yesterday. Went to the car, battery dead (only sat for 1 week). So I figured I'd roll start the car since my driveway is on a hill. Release the parking brake to roll the car forward and nothing, car sticks. Great , dead battery AND frozen e-brake lol. Ended up jumping the car and as soon as I applied some gas, the brake unstuck itself.

Yah it says cars made before 10/5/05 or something, mine was made like a month later. I havent had the problem yet, so hopefully they had figured it out before my build.

This happened to me on friday, I'm having the TSB addressed soon. Friday morning it was below freezing, and it worked fine starting up and getting to work, but it was frozen when I started it up for my drive back. I was on my way to the office xmas party, so I fiddled with it in the parking lot and finally got it to unstick.

The result of this is that I am parking it in gear, and I need new rear pads and a resurface on the rotors.

Make sure your dealer thoroughly checks this out, or you might have my experience. I had the same problem and took it in. They didn't tell me, but they ran a test and one cable failed and the other passed, but I didn't know that. A week later, I had the same problem again and called them up. They explained the test they ran and then replaced the passenger side cable too. Once again, I thought all was good. A day after I got it back, I was driving and noticed a lot of grinding in the rear. Turns out the stuck parking brake was engaging the pads just enough with the rotors to burn out the rear brake pads. They didn't catch it when they replaced the cables because they never took the wheels off. I ended up getting a rear brake job out of it under warranty. The dealer also apologized for failing to catch the whole problem.
