Have the non-retracting exterior door handles been improved?

I had to get my drivers side replaced last year, and now my passenger side has done the same thing. I think this is a plastic pin that breaks inside the handle, but does anybody know if they have improved the quality of these handles, or are they the same stock? Just curious, because if they are gonna keep breaking, I will be inclined to just live with it......

I had my driver door handle replaced 3 weeks ago, since it was sticking. I honestly doubt that its better quality or will last a long time. Just have to be gentle with the car.

I figured my handle was just sticking. You're saying that some plastic part is breaking in the handle mechanism? Please elaborate. Thanks man.

I thought someone posted a fix for it sometime back. I haven't searched for it. It had detailed instructions on how to mod the handle so it won't fail to retract again.

The dealer replaced my driver side door handle on my 2007 before I even picked the car up. I think it had that same problem.

When I first got my car, one of the first things I noticed is how the handle didn't seem to be able to handle the weight of the door. Since then I pull on the handle to unlock the door and then pull the door open using the edge of the door. This is poor design, but hopefully, I won't have any problems.

Easy fix: Take it to the dealership and let them fix it. It is a known TSB (can't recollect the TSB #) but it was taken care of in three hours in my case.

If anyone does have the TSB # - would be good to have. When this problem came up as a thread, I checked the TSB listing on this site and also MyCarStats and couldn't find it.

They told me at the dealership that there is a plastic pin that has been breaking inside the handle. Can't elaborate any more than that, because I don't have a clue other than what they told me, but having had the drivers side done quite some time ago, now I need to do the passenger side.

I'm still surprised that they replace the full outside handle for this probleme. because what I saw in previous thread about this issue it's in connection of the rod to the macanism that is slipping when it happens. It has nothing to do with the actual handle itself.

Based on older threads that I have read, it,s a plstic threaded clip that is slipping on a threaded metal rod, that is slipping out of place and changing the adjusment of the handle. The solution was to add a metal nut on the threaded rod before and after the plastic clip to lock it into place so it won't slip.

Why changing the whole door handle ?

Evidently most Ford service depts. don't realize this fix (if it is fact), but it would be nice to know for sure, to be able to print this info out for all of our respective dealerships to have on hand, since obviously alot of us will be having this problem addressed.

Nope, the fix doesn't always work - the dealer replaced our passenger side when it was 3 months old, then wanted to do the "fix" on the driver's side 3 months later when it broke.

Long story short, I ended up getting a new driver's side as well... so much for the "fix"

Thanks Marcello...... Knowing your experience on the matter, I will not even bring the 'Fix' to their attention , and just have them order the whole new handle for the passenger side instead.

Well, I will say that when the free time presents itself, I have a fix in mind that will be more permanent than just replacing it with another OEM ready-to-break handle.
