Does your paint chip as easily as mine?
Does your paint chip as easily as mine?
I have an 06 UA (Black) that was made in Feb 06. I am the original owner and I have a dozen or so paint chips down to primer on my hood. There are 4 or 5 on the rest of the car but mostly the hood. The bumpers have none which makes me think it is an adhesion problem. The car was driven on the interstate early on but mostly at zero / low traffic times. I'm now 1.5 miles from work so the car doesn't get driven much. Is anyone else experiencing chips? I know I can get touchup paint but it shows up so easily on a black car.
Remember, it's aluminum !

I found a chip in mine 5 days after delivery which was 3 weeks ago. I was begining to wonder how soft the paint / clear coat was myself. The difference is my chip is in the upper rear quarter on the passenger side. It's tiny, can barely be seen, and bugs the hell outta me. I'm hoping that it was just a freak rock and not a paint problem!
Yeh...I have two, right in front of the hood scoop. Touched them up, polished, etc., but I still know they are there. I keep the front edge of the hood covered with a partial bra from the GT. Front bumper is fine. (fingers crossed)
I just received the Colgan Bra, for the Shelby, today and as soon as it warms up, it will go on. The hood portion of the Colgan seems to go further up the hood then the Ford version.

I have one chip on the leading edge of my hood and an itsy bitsy teeny weeny one on the drivers side "C" area on the quarter panel. You do know the paint on our Mustangs is basically non existent. I think there may be two color coats and two clear (if that). This is the only real complaint I have about my Mustang... cheap paint job.
in a word, YES. I have never had a car that chip like this one, including my wife's old honda civic. I had a detailing shop (over 20 years ago now, geez i'm getting old) for several years, broad clientele from everyday cars to two collections (old muscle and classics, ferrari, jag, etc) so I've had some real experience with different finishes. I'm also not driving places that I used to drive a great deal and were real chip makers. In 18,000 miles, I've got a dozen real chips, down to primer or worse, and only one is on a leading edge - this total doesn't include the bumper - I never expect any paint job to withstand bumper to bumper contact, though it would be nice)
Suffice to say - when consumers compare fords in general and the mustang in particular to other makes, they should be discounting their price paid by an amount that takes into account a finish that will degrade much more quickly than competing cars. If you replace your car every 3 years, I'd say not much, but if you like to keep them 7 years plus, I'd say you better take into account the cost of a full repaint.

I just got my second one... this time on the hood and much more noticable then my rear fender one.
I'm off to the dealers body shop tomorrow to get my GT/CS stripe replaced due to dirt under under it. I'll see what they can do about the chip. I'm also going to order a clear bra for the hood and maybe the front too. $280 for both, but if it keeps the chips away it will be money well spent.

Yes, I have a black '05 (only 6500 miles) and there are several chips on the hood. This has been a problem that members have been reporting on since 2005. It's too bad that Ford couldn't have done a better job with the paint adhesion on the hoods.
Yes. I have 3 on a car with 4000 miles. All of them are on the metal/aluminum body parts and none on fiberglass/urethane parts. Being UA black I notice them and they bug the crap out of me. My F150 goes through more crap and alhtough its a light color has a flawless paint job. And I have had concrete stck to it before.
Unacceptable Paint on my 2008 Mustang
I had my GT/CS less than 100 miles, bam, a couple pebbles flew up from WHO KNOWS WHERE......put a nice chip on my hood on the drivers side, then it hit the black band on the lower portion of my drivers side windshield. Putting 2 nicks in the glass. I owned a brand new 1981 Ford Fairmont for 12 years, I drove in snow/salt.....when I sold the car, the paint looked like new and I never put the car in a garage. Same goes for an 1983 Escort, the paint held up great.
I missed dime to golf ball size hail yesterday by about 5 minutes. It would have been a good excuse to get the vehicle repainted better than OE and a few paint type of mods done but I'm still glad I missed it.
