air bag did not deploy during accident?
Anyone hear or have a situation when during an accident the air bags not deploying. My friend has a 05 v6 conv.she got into a really bad accident.just wondering if anyone has heard of this happening.

I have. I think it may depend on the accident. I know someone who was involved in a rollover where the airbag did not deploy because there was never a big frontal impact. Sorry to hear about your friend. Hope she gets well soon.

My old boss was just T-boned last week in his GMC Sierra at highway speed and rolled three times. No airbags deployed!

I worked in a body shop back in the 90s and have seen many wrecks where the front air bags did not deploy. Most often they were roll overs. Sometimes they were side impacts. The sensors that I have seen in ford vehicles (back then) were little black cube devices mounted in the very front of the vehicle usually somewhere behind the grill.

Hmm, Might want to call the Ford Customer Assistance Center.

Here's an old article, but might still be relevant.

Not to get graphic, but how fast was the estimated combined impact speed? Might have had something to do with it... Also full front versus side front... like if it hit the Pax side, just to, it might not make the driver's side go off?
I honestly don't know any real info, but I am wondering if more detail might explain it better... Scary.
Oh, yeah, has this car been in her possession it's entire life, or is she second+ owner? Perhaps it has a nasty little secret. I hope not, obviously.

Could be lots of different things. Speed, angle, weight, even seatbelt usage. Not going of does not necessarily indicate a problem. Did the driver suffer frontal injuries? Body hit the wheel? Head hit the windshield?

Not sure on the speed ill have to ask her.she can only text right now.her face hit the steeering wheel. so its hard for her to talk.she said she was wearing her seat belt.yes she has owned the car since new.judgeing from the pics she sent me the whole front is gone i would say even if i leaned more to one side it still crushed the entire front. she said she got cut off and hit a divider.
Thanks for all your replys this is a great site.people always get back to you with helpful info.

It has to be a very bad crash for the air bags to deploy. 99% (just a guess from what i've seen) of the time if the wreck is bad enough for the air bags to deploy, the car is a total loss.

If her face hit the steering wheel and she was wearing her belt, then the bags probably should've gone off. But who knows, could be a wire from the airbag sensors to the control module could've been severed prior to when they should've deployed? It's probably not anything that anyone is going to be able to answer online. Something like this would take at the very least an in person inspection, likely a forensic crash investigator and/or testing of the control module, EDR, etc to give you a solid answer.
