Its not a common occurence for the factory plug to break but the factory design does allow for that possibility and if you dont have the special tool required to get the plug out from Ford you're going to be pulling the cylinder heads off to fix it.
Why would the plug break below the thread line? I don't understand the physics of this unless the bottom portion acts as a seal too.

I'd be more concerned about anti-sieze dripping or contaminating the electrodes on the spark plug. I haven't heard of any long-term results using the Brisk plugs. I am just going to keep the stock plugs for now and deal with it later and wait for the OEM to release updated 1-piece spark plugs.

The bottom part corrodes badly and can fuse to the aluminium cylinder head. You can put anti-seize compound on the thread , but not that portion and when you try to remove plug it breaks there ...

07Foose posted this link to a TSB for the same problem with 05 ford F150. The last page shows where to put the antiseize compound on the bottom portion of the plug.
http://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricant.../tsb/06152.pdf

Since this is most likely not done at the factory, I was curious if, even using the two piece plug, as long as the AS compound is applied if it would alleviate the problem

I did just that and was told that I would have to pay if they broke them.

Good find That's exactly where I was talking about in my post above. I've been putting the anti-seize on the threads only , but it looks like you can put it on lower portion too. I got my anti-seize at NAPA , is the Nickel anti-seize it refers to a special kind ?

Thanks KC!!!

I'm assuming that with only about 4000 miles on my car I shouldn't have any problems with the ground cap of the plug sticking yet???? If not, as a worse case scenario, does anyone have an idea how much that Rotunda special tool costs?
thanks.

Exactly

I watched my brothers face as he changed the plugs on his wife's 05 - maybe 25K mileage?

you hear the porcelain crack as it starts to break.......................

thankfully his good racing buddy has had this happen before on a few F150s he's worked on and he was able to get it out...... along with the other THREE that broke.......

what a mess....

called family friend who was in Ford service for a couple decades and just recently retired

they KNOW that this problem can occur in the S197s - so I wouldn't be surprised if they change this for the '10s.....

Maybe they ought to recall the plugs - it's more serious than the airbag issue for short women.

It looks like Champion has a new one piece plug for the 3V 5.4L engines.

Sorry I need to ask...

Is the Autolite HT1 a one or two piece design?
What is the Brisk part # for their replacement plug for NA Mustangs?
Does anyone have a pic of the new (if available) Ford plug?

Thanks.

The only problem with the brisk plug, for my car at least, is that it is one step colder than the factory plug.

If I had a modified engine, it wouldn't be a problem, but alas, I don't.

I did some research on the Brisk’s plug they make two, 3VR17YS for under 450 HP and 3VR14S a colder plug for over 450 HP Steeda sells them.

I also found this very good video on the problem. It looks at the 5.4 but the heads are the same…chose episode 26.

Hey man! Todd checked the gauge after I sent it back - it was fine

turns out it was the CABLE that plugs into the port - they sent me the wrong one

So he's returning my gauge and a new cable - hope to have it by this weekend! (fingers crossed) I'll get you an update when everything is working via email
