T-45 Bites the dust.

Well, On Saturday evening I went for a little trip to do some bowling with some fellow European based Mustang owners. On the autobahn on the way back, doing about 110-120, 5th gear starts making a weird sound.....not good. I slow down and downshift to 4th, hoping that the 1:1 ratio will hold out and I nurse the car home doing about 45. Needless to say my 2 hour return trip took slightly longer. My post is immediately next to the autoban with only 1 stoplight in between. After stopping at the light and attempting to pull out I realize that 1-3 AND now 4th is making a sound. I can only guess that it is related to the input shaft since It doesn't make a sound with the clutch depressed but will make a sound even in neutral with the clutch engaged.Today I babied the car to the vehicle storage lot which is about 3 blocks from here and dropped it off for the deployment.

I have already decided on a T-56 swap. There are several vendors out there selling the 2003/04 T-56's. According to my research I will need to relocate my crossmember. I can reuse my brand new transmission mount with the 03/04 tranny's.

I will get a shortend drive shaft. I know that I could just shorten my stock one but I want to have all parts on hand and do the swap in 1 block of time. That and I would have to get a 27 spline yoke to re-use my stock one as well. By the time you add up the German labor rate and parts, I'm looking at a new one anyway. I will also have to wire up a reverse lockout switch but I understand that some don't even bother to do this anyway.

Other than that it seems like a straight-forward swap. I know I'll need a new shifter too, but I think that's pretty much it.

Anybody know if the tranny bolts are TTY?
Anything I'm overlooking?

Not sure if the clutch is the same for the T-56. 98 Cobra is a little different than an 03/04. Someone else might want to correct me but i believe the clutch system changed in 99 or 00

The cobra's went to an 11" flywheel/clutch but it is still a 10 spline and the earlier clutch will work.

Mine has only about 8k miles on it so I'm sure it is fine.

Are you talking about Bell housing bolts? I reuse them. I don't think they are TTY. The 96 Service manual doesn't say anything about using new ones.

What are you going to do with the old T-45?
