Synthetic oils

I was reading in one of the magazines that Royal Purple recommended to not change their oil for 12,000 miles.

Just to do a filter change every 3000 and top off the oil level....

Somehow I don't think royal purple would fight ford to honor my warranty on the wifes Fusion if I tried that.

What are your thoughts?

all they have to do is test the oil and make sure its still good if you blow an engine. case closed. Syn oil is awsome to bad so many people waste it by changing it too soon.

There are lots of conditions that effect oil performance. I am sure that RP came up with 12k miles under perfect conditions. I like synthetics and use them in some of our cars. I even have RP in my T5 tranny and have been very pleased with it. I dont think I would try and run 12k miles between oil change intervals (even with a filter change at 3k).

I am no expert by any stretch but I always change my synthetic oil every 6k miles and filter every 3k miles. Its just a peace of mind thing.

If you ever want to really fill your brain up with info on all kinds of oils and grease.. Check out bobistheoilguy.com fourms. Be warned that as soon as you get on that forum you will not get up from your computer chair for several hours.. hahaha.

It all depends on your driving conditions. I drive about 85% highway miles, and I change my oil every 7,500 miles. I could go out to 10,000 I'm sure because I've tested it several times before with Used Oil Analysis by www.blackstone-labs.com. I just prefer 7,500 because I enjoy changing the oil, and I would rather err on the side of caution. Plus I have enough oil in my garage to run a fleet thanks to all the recent oil sales.

Synth is good stuff. I've used Mobil 1, but try and use Lucas if possible. Lucas reps told me to change no sooner than 5000 miles. As most know, I rarely drive my car (an '02 with just over 5000 total); therefore, they said I should go ahead and change it once a year regardless of miles.

I recently swapped to Royal purple in the wifes car about 2 months ago.
So far here are the results.
Motorcraft Synthetic blend City MPG 24 Hwy MPG 32
Royal Purple City MPB 26 Hwy MPG 35

I used to cars MPG computations for the results. I have ALWAYS monitored the MPG around town and during road trips. I was actually quite surprised.

The oil actually pays for itself over the life of a typical oil change interval.
