Plans for the Cobra

I am looking to do a few things for the Cobra in the future.

It is all suspension related, feel free to offer some advice. The plan is to make my cobra a Trackable street car, and perhaps join a few of the members on some of their NASA fun.

I need to fix my IRS wheel hop issues. Currently the car has the Delrin bushings on the lower IRS control arms, and the Subframe has the Poly bushings installed. I feel that my next step will be the Delrin upper arm bushings and the aluminum differential mounts. I also need to get off my duff and have my rear IRS brackets welded/reenforced, and install my 14mm front IRS bolts in place of the 12mm currently installed. The undersize bolts lead to noise, and i'm sure the extra movement doesn't help the wheel hop at all.

From there I have to address my spring/ stance situation. The car has an Eibach Sportline kit.....well at least it used to. Now it has the Eibach springs on the front and the Stock IRS springs on the rear. To say that the rear of the car is high would be an understatement.

I am looking to go to a coil over set up on the front and perhaps on the rear as well. I am contemplating the rear because even if I get a coil over kit, I still need to get some different rear springs, and don't feel like buying a full kit, just for some rear springs. Maybe I can find someone to split a kit for me so I don't have to buy the whole thing, or find someone who is doing a IRS to Solid rear swap and needs the springs.

Any thoughts on whether anyone will split a kit or not?

I had planned on starting to fund this with $600 that my wife had intercepted so i'm going to have to do some enron type sneeky stuff and get some more capital coming in............Anybody need a kidney?

Wheel hop won't be a problem on the road course. Get your rearend all settled in, install some new brake pads, flush the fluid, change the oil, and come play.

NASA has a nice oil-for-food program. You work two weekends as a race starter, grid worker, corner worker, registration, and they will give you a free weekend of track time with instruction ($300 value). You don't need a "track car" to do it. People show up with anything from an S-10 pickup to a brand new Viper.

Plan to go with us in March to Road Atlanta, even if it's just to watch. Free pizza and beer Saturday evening too.

I wonder......Does anyone think I could cut my 03 springs in the rear to get the drop.....the 03 springs are 600 lb/in and the FRPP-J springs are 570 lb/in. It should give me more spring and then I can still switch to a coil over up front.

If not then I could just get the J-springs and not worry about the coil over at all.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Road Atlanta is a world class road course race track. The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) runs that track twice a year, in conjunction with several other tracks, including Barber Motorsports in Birmingham (October). We hold High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) driving school, where anyone with a car gets classroom and in-car instruction, to learn to drive your car at the limits (usually driver's limits). We also have experienced racers that compete in Wheel-to-Wheel racing for points. The cars that show up vary from Miatas to Vipers to tubechassis racecars. LMan and I have been doing this for several years, and it's the most fun I've ever had at a car event.

We're heading back down there March 16-18. It's too late to register for the school, but it's still a blast just to watch and beg for a rightseat ridealong.

Here's a video of me at Barber Motorsports this past Labor Day at the MCA Bash. I'm the 0034 Bullitt just in front of the incar camera.

Thanks to Mark for loaning me a drill that would accept a 1/2" bit I got my 14mm bolts in this weekend. I also went ahead and cut a coil out of the 600lb springs, and lubed up the delrin bushings on the LCA's.

All in all, it turned out pretty good. The rattle and squeek that I had from the rear is gone, and the car now sits pretty level as well. Another thing that I think may be improved is the wheel hop. The reason i'm not sure is that my little girl was in the car with me this evening and I didn't want to get into the throttle too much......I'll re-evaluate tomorrow.

I'm glad that the 600lb springs worked out. I really didn't want to spend $200+ on some spring kit, only to use the rears and then shell out some more coin for a front coil over.

Now, I need to get my brackets welded in, get to Coil over kit ordered/installed and get a good alignment.
