Need a hand troubleshooting ignition prob
Hey, anyone wanna come over and help me troubleshoot?
Got an MSD 6AL with a Tach Adapter (stock tach) and an 85 dizzy. Been this way for a good amount of time. There were a couple of times driving it that I would come to a stop, and when I would go to take off, it would just die. Like the ignition was turned off. Well, the Saturday night several of us went to Vic's, I got out of the car at the house and it just died. All of these times it would crank right back up. Driven it a couple of times since.
Tonight I took out #5 to clean the plug because it fouls all the time due to oil. I forgot to put the plug wire back on. It tried to start, then died. Since then I have nothing. I have tested the MSD and it is sending spark when told. I am thinking maybe the dizzy components. Not sure how I am going to troubleshoot that without pulling the dizzy and putting in another.
Anyone want a beer? If so, email me.

I've committed to a car show on Saturday the 12th and would love to have this thing running again.

an MSD 6 box actually made me take my 429 out of my stang and put in a fresh 351 .. i had thought my 429 was wore out due to not reving beyond 4 grand .. the windsor did the same till i got a new box .. it can give a multitude of problems
I wish I could help, but headed to Yuma in the morning. If you need to borrow an MSD distributor you can come pull it out of my racecar. Call me on my cell and I'll inform Sherry that you're coming over.
I need the distributor back by 6/16. Got a race the following weekend.
Sorry can't help more.

Okay. According to a test light I have fire at the plug. So, it is not making sense that the engine is not even trying to fire. Not one lick. Just cranks. I figure I would get some sort of sputter from it.
Anybody have any ideas?

if your getting fuel and spark, then it is probably a timing issue,
ford distributors are known to sheer of the roll pin on the distributor gear.

Yep, pumping fuel.
Timing is where it should be. Dizzy is turning like it should.
Could the spark be too weak to ignite? How to test? Swap a coil?
As much as I crank it, I have not heard one cylinder fire.
That is why this is stumping me.
It's like the run circuit is not energized.

Well, I would.
But at the beginning of this post I asked for a hand.
Mark D. had a reason why he could not come over and help and no one else has offered.
I have found that the dog would rather play ball and the cat does not want to mess up her hair.
Of course, I am sure holding the wire would give me a perm. Not sure it is the best way to test.
I think I'll try another approach.
Know the specs of the coil's primary and secondary resistance values?
Is there some other spark tester that would determine a weak or hot spark?

i bought a truck from a member on here that would not start after it got hot unless you let it sit for several hours .. found out all the injectors leaked .. when you cut the engine off it flooded itself to death ..
Pull the plugs, reconnect the wires, ground the plugs, and watch them spark. If they throw a spark, move on to fuel, assuming you've already put a timing light on it and verified you don't have a loose timing chain.
