Maybe moving to Decatur

Hi,
We have been living in the Philippines for the last 9 years and are thinking about selling our house here and moving to probably the Decatur area. Looking forward to getting a 2011 (or '12) Mustang V6 Prem coupe as soon as we get there. Can someone give me a rough estimate on what TLD (tax, license, docs) would run on say a $30,000 new car registered in Decatur?

Thanks for any help. Hope to see some of you guys in the near future.

Gee, I have no idea. Probably a call into Woody Anderson Ford would help you.

Taxes - depends on the city or county where you live. Huntsville was 4% when I was selling cars a few years ago. No idea idea what Decatur taxes are. County taxes are usually lower than city.
DOC fees - depends on the dealership.

I think Decatur is a little higher

IIRC, Decatur has 4% City tax + 1% Morgan County sales fee for a total of 5%

It's not for sure yet. We still have to try and sell our house here first. It's been an adventure living here, but we are both in our 60's now and medical and some other things are really lacking over here.

And thanks for everybody else that answered. Boy, 8%? I think that's what I paid in California before . Guess we'll just have to wait till we get there and figure out exactly what town we're gonna settle in.

Thanks again

Property tax is cheap in Alabama, don't know the rate, but recently moved to Tennessee and it is much higher as we don't have state income tax. kennyg

This is regular retail sales tax - not for vehicles - for large purchases (such as vehicles)

State sales tax - 2%
County sales tax - 1%
City sales tax - 1%

Plus an Ad Valorem tax - depending on your last name - when your tags are expiring.
I only thought the rate was 5% because of my total on my last purchase included $100+ on the Ad Valorem tax

So - bottom line is 4% for a vehicle purchase (used) - there could be an additional transaction fee on new stuff, plus you need to account for a title fee (~$20), registration fee, (~$20), etc.

Also, some dealers only collect the 2% State tax at the sale and you pay the other to the license director when you register the vehicle - this happens a lot if you buy a car outside of the county where you are a resident.
