Local Mustang Owner Gets old car on front of Mustang Monthly

A contributor to this forum, Dan Case (Decatur), used to own the Grabber Orange Boss 429 that is on the front cover and featured in this month's Mustang Monthly. Dan bought the car out of the Huntsville Times, for around $1700 if I remember right. I have pictures of this car when he used to live over in Holiday Homes. I believe he sold it, his Calypso Coral '69 Boss 302 and his '65 Shelby GT350 in order to buy his first 289 Cobra.

Mike,

You are correct, that car was listed in the Times for $1700. Terry Honea owned it at that time, and had been trying to trade the Boss engine for the 351-C engine in David Godfreys' '64 Falcon...yes, really! After Dan bought the car, I went through the old sales records at WAF ( I was working in the truck shop there at the time) and found the original sales invoice for the Boss. I can't remember the original owners name, but he traded in a '66 GT-350 on the Boss. I really wanted the Boss car, but had just bought a '69 Sportsroof (non-Mach 1) 428 Drag Pak car, and didn't have any more money....I was very bummed to say the least...

Got my copy of MM in the last couple of days and read the article. Left the part out about Dan's acquisition. Is Wicks content with the trade or loathing? kennyg

Dan's name was mentioned, as was Woody Anderson Ford along with a copy of the bill of sale with the salesman's name, H. Brown. I remember Dan giving me a ride in that car one day. Only Boss 429 I've ever been for a ride in.

Tony DeLoach traded in a red 1966 GT350 for the Boss '9 and I traded it in towards my black Cobra, sort of full circle I guess, Shelby car to Boss back to Shelby car.

I gave lots of people rides in that car. Everybody seemed to really enjoy it before I detuned it and put full length exhaust on it. It was pretty loud with those large tube JR® brand headers, burnt out Thrust® brand glass packs, and about eight inches of pipe so the worst of the sound bombardment was past the front seats. It was really super loud with nothing past the headers but that didn't last long, just too loud to be driven around Huntsville.

Even when the Goodrich® tires were brand new (John Grinstead and I bought three sets of tires at the same time, his GT500KR and two of my Boss cars.) they would spin uselessly if too much rpm was used to get going. They did four wheel drift in turns under full throttle third gear well though. I use to think it was nuts to have that much power in a street car.
