Good looking buildup, Rogue.
I looked in lots of ways of doing mine. The Edels from there are still over $1100. I came close to going that route, but knew that I would have to cut the pistons to put them on.
The GT40s I picked up were off a 96 Exploder and was not cut down like the GT40s that came on the 93-95 Cobra. They were $380 to my door.

Yet, for that money, a set of used GT40s can be had all day long for $350-$400 shipped. Unmolested GT40s outflow and outperform ported E7s. Lots of data on the Internet. If you do not trust the seller on the condition of the used heads, SCH will do them for $250 in one day (or, of course, buy from someone else). That makes it $650.
I looked at that route as well.

First tank with foot in it for "testing purposes".
18.1MPG and no oil usage.
I do see a bit of smoke on WOT and I am thinking I am fat on the jets (plus I eased up on the spring so the secondaries are opening early). Need some tuning here.
Steve, want that ride?

How about putting up a collection for me I could use some heads and only 400.00 to spend, maybe some rich soul will feel sorry for me and donate another 600 for aluminum heads! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Took a friend driving in the country yesterday. A bunch of country roads, some 55MPH roads, etc. Same kind of driving I do all week. Filled up.
218miles / 9.86gallons = 22.1MPG
*laughs* Insane. Also ordered an MSD 6AL ignition that should be in this week. Think that will help my gas mileage?
Steve, yes, I do have the spring kit. I cannot remember the jet sizes, I will have to check. I think I fattened it up to 68/76 at least. May even be running 70s in the front. I at least know the rears are too big with the smoke. I am pretty sure it is fuel, not oil.
I love the website. I have to tell ya though, the heads are gone and the intake is spoken for. But, I have a couple of other pieces that I should get rid of. Ya know, it is always nice to have pics with used stuff for sale. I should shoot you a couple and get you some more stuff to sell.

Steve, you had it right. 68s and 72s. So I threw in the plain secondary spring, 65s and 70s. Will start tuning from there. That puts both the front and rear one size larger than what the carb came with from the factory.

That sounds like a good place to start on the jets. I honestly think you will find the car will run best in that 65 to 68 jet range. If I remember right you are not running big heads, intake or huge cam. On the secondary springs. I would see when they drop in...change the spring lighter and lighter until then "dump in" too early and then back off. I have to say its easier to tune in the right spring on a automatric car than a stick shift. You need to make your test passes from the same starting RPM's 1200 ish in second or third gear?? and note what happens and when. Just my opinions. Let me know if I can help.

Yeah, I now have the stock 86 shortblock (stock cam) with the Explorer GT40 heads, Weiand Stealth intake, Hooker SuperComp shorties, the roller rockers are 1.6, and the Holley 600. Also at 12-degrees timing and I have an MSD 6AL coming in.
So, I think I am at a good start with going back to the 65s. I keep think of investing in an oxygen sensor and hooking up a DVM and tune that way. Much easier than reading plugs.

Thanks, Cliff.
I noticed that it idles very smooth. I turned in the idle mixture screws ~3/4 turn yesterday when I got it all back together.
I hear no pinging, but I think I am feeling the secondaries opening. It pulls good, then really starts pulling hard at ~3500RPM all the way up to shift. It's a little chilly now so I think I will concentrate first on getting the MSD hooked up, then start carb tuning.

MSD 6AL ignition box hooked up great. Notice a smoother idle (how can it get any smoother?) and more low-end torque. Need to pick up a Tach adapter to get my stock tach working again. Only 18MPG last tank. Hmmm....
