Finally figured out Carb Problem
Finally figured out Carb Problem
OK back on track once again.. I can now make the trip to the exhaust shop to have the new cats, and macs run on true duals.
After spending 2 days wondering how the open choke was bogging the engine it suddenly hit me. If its lean then it needs spark sooner! I ran the vac advance directly to manifold vac on the driver side of the carb and SHAZAAM! I have always been told to use the "ported" aka "timed" vac on the pass side of the carb. In this case, the lack of vac at idle was not allowing the vac-advance to function. So all this time it wasnt rich, it was lean.
I took her for a spin around Madison and no problems. The shift light did stay on for a couple minutes but then went out.

Cool.
You can go for either ported or manifold. You just need to set your timing and adjust for either one.
In my case, ported is better. Remember, total timing is base, plus mechanical, plus vacuum (or electronic). Depending upon your timing curve, you may do better with a higher base and ported. You need to tune to figure out which is better for your setup.
The below URL will help.
