Big Problem

I am having a problem with the mustang now. We can't get it to start at all. Also the carb keeps gushing gas out of it. Carb is covered in gas and it is dripping on the exhaust manifold and on the ground. What is wrong? I was thinking we need a carb rebuild kit for it.

This is the 2nd carb to break. First was a holley 1v and now this FoMoCo 1v.

Just found out the gas isn't coming from the top of the carb. The top is dry and the bottom is soaked.

Usually when a carb starts pissing gas it is the float assembly and needle valve. You most likely will benefit from a rebuild kit. If the float gets a pinhole in it it won't "float" and therefore sinks and lets gas gush into the carb with no regard for demand. The same thing happens when the needle connected to the float doesn't seat and stop the incoming fuel.

I have no direct experience with your carb setup, but I've fixed plenty "back in the day".

I will check it out tomorrow. I can't take a carb apart by myself. I forget how it goes back together.

You can do it. Buy a can of carb cleaner and a rebuild kit. Read the directions and you'll be fine.

I have been told it might be the float.

I want a 3-to-1 carb setup and headers. Just way too much $ for them.

Well I took the carb mostly apart. Found out there is rust in the bowl and also the diaphram is cracked. So I am going to clean that up and get the diaphram either tonight or tomorrow.

You really should do a complete rebuild. The needle for the seat and the float are most likely inexpensive and worthy of replacement. You can dick around with a carb forever, but a simple rebuild is a quick way to get a majority of the issue sorted out.

Yeah I am looking at a rebuild right now. I just can't find the rebuild kit I need.

I have a Ford Model 1250 1v carb and the carb number is C50F-Y

Maybe it's the float! JK LOL
Where is your original carburetor? You have a '65 Fairlane carb on there now. kennyg

I never had the original carb. I only had the holley on it. Then I got the Ford one from my grandfather because it was an extra and it didn't fit his. I need to find a rebuild kit fast. Can I use a Ford 1100 model rebuild kit? I need the kit by tomorrow or Wednesday before DQ.

You will have to get the correct kit for your specific carb. Take along the ID tag info to the parts store, they may have to order it. Carquest would be a recommendable source for the right part and they have a warehouse in Nashville. DO NOT compromise when repairing a fuel leak (or brakes) just to make an event. You have many years ahead of you to enjoy your Mustang. SAFETY FIRST! We had a club member several years back with a beautifully restored '65 fastback that had a fuel problem. He repaired it and was checking under his Stang for leaks with an old cage light, when fuel dripped on the hot bulb and burst into flames, burning up his nicely detailed engine compartment. kennyg

Get rid of the holley and get a Edelbrock 600 w/ elec choke. I have had one on my 69 Camaro for 12 years and it works perfect. I have have had one on my 82GT and now on my 85GT and have always been more than pleased with them. You will not have any leaking problems with edelbrock.

Now granted I am talking about a street car because that is what I have used them on. I would suggest something else if you are more of a race/strip car.

That carb would be too big for my engine. I don't have a V8, I have an I6 200. I am getting the rebuild kit tomorrow and we just got a new fuel filter. Should be ready for DQ. If I could sell the holley I would, but it is too broken. That is why we got the Ford carb.

BA, We know you got your carb fixed because you made it to DQ. How about a follow up or a thread with pics on the rebuild and costs. kennyg
