99 gt eatting belts
99 gt eatting belts
ok in my 97 mustang vert lives a 99 gt motor, which likes to eat belts, 2 belts in 9 months
it is doing the same thing as last time some minor squeaking and when i looked there is belt dust on the timing cover!
last time i changed it i also changed idler pulley, tensioner and pulley, and checker water pump, alternator and power steering pump (which is only 1 year old)
when i first put on the power steering pump i thought i would do some preventative maintenance and change the tensioner and idler, i thought i might have got a pad one so i swapped them out wit the last belt, but i cant see it being the tensioner or idler again unless the quality just sucks!
any advice

My engine started doing that when I replaced the engine. I had also bought a new idler pulley and power steering pump. The first thing I did is start the car to watch all of the pulleys to determine if any of them were warped. I then used a good piece of straight iron and put it up against the pulleys. I found that my pulley on the power steering was not right. Since the pump was also very loud (reman), I pulled it back off and replaced it again. The pulleys all lined up and I have had no problem (knock on wood).
1) Check all the pulleys for warpage.
2) Use a straight edge to find if a pulley is out of alignment.
Also, I found that my water pump pulley had some "gunk" on it. This also has made my belts jump off.

If everything is spinning freely with the belt off, it might be the alternator under load.
Check all your major wires for excessive current draw (are they fresh and well connected ?).
Make sure your battery connections are good and the battery itself.
Just something I've found in the past.

ok finally had time to pull everything , alternator is perfect no drag at all, water pump is fine, then i noticed the ps pump, it looked fine at first, then i realized it stuck out a little, measured it and it is between 1/16-1/8 inch out compared to the crank! there is also at least 1/16th of an inch i can press it onto the ps pump shaft before the installer would bottom out, seems who i had install the pump did a bad job, once again why i prefer to do things myself!
am curious though, the shaft has some end play(in and out) less then 1/18 an inch is this common, 0 up and down play though

oooooh my ***** **** ******** ****
ok well, got the loaner tool p/s installer from autozone and screwed it in just like your suppose to, sinched up the install part(little nut with a bearing on 1 side), got my 18mm ratched wrench and a jack handle(hard reach with just the wrench) things were going perfect, got about 8 1/8 turns on it(2 clicks of the wrench at a time) then all of a sudden, it the installer tool just gave way and now i have a broken stud in my ps pump, i did get it on a little further however it is still not 100%
my options are to
#1 replace the ps pump with a new one
#2 try to use an easy out and remove the broken stud
#3 just leave it and see if it was enough
#4 shoot the car!
any help would be appreciated

When the installer tool stud broke, it probably wasn't bottomed out, rather it was the extreme tension on the stud. You might get so lucky as to take the 'half' that broke off and use it to back the broken part out by hand. In other words the stud that's broken off in the pump may be loose. kennyg
enough of the stud is sticking out so i will try to weld onto it and remove it, i will get a Grade 8 bolt and some washers with the grease like kennyg mentioned and hopefully that will work!
