I see Bud Ekins passed away this week. Top Gear's Richard Hammond wrote a nice tribute to Ekins in the UK Mirror, which you can read here. It's a great read, and he contrasts the sort of real stunt work done back in the era of Bullitt or The Great Escape against the sort of implausible, nonsensical way they'd probably shoot films like that today >>

If McQueen and Ekins were to remake the Great Escape today, we would expect the rider of the bike to hurtle over the fence at 250mph with his hair on fire while leaning out of the saddle to spray machine-gun fire at a horde of marauding aliens with lasers, before executing a double-flip and landing on the other side of the fence in time to rescue an injured puppy from the jaws of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Hmmmm... I think I saw that Michael Bay film.
