Got a $$ on the Shelby charge finally!

Well I just got off the phone with my sales person and he got a memo from Ford today finally with pricing. The price for the work done at Shelby is $7800. I may be off slightly as I was so irritated with the numbers I got. Right after this I was told they would be also adding a ADM to the car. After telling me they wouldnt. So the total price would now be about 41K with the gas guzzler tax and before the ADM. For that kind of $$ Id rather have the GT500. I thought this add on for Shelby was going to be like 4k. I am just fed up and have decided to just not buy anything. I have an 06 GT and Im going to stick with it. I have always been a die hard Ford guy but I am now rethinking that as well. Why keep buying my company vehicles from a company that doesnt appreciate my business. Good luck tho those who are getting this car. And bring lube.

Amen Brother, I've got an 05 Black GT and I'm going the clone (my god he's building a poser) route, I can't see it for 19 hp. I've already done my side stripes, ordered an over the top stripe kit and I'll get the other after market parts from Shelby.

There was just way to much hype on this car and to much disinformation and no pictures, what a shame. The ADM's for 19 hp are just not worth it in my opinion.

For those that buy enjoy, but the majority of this is just cosmetic...

Just my thoughts

You are not alone in this feeling.

I was initially very excited about the Shelby GT. I was one of it's biggest defenders on here and ernestly planned to get one. I thought it would be around $32-33K, then word came that it would be ~$35K, then it was almost $36K. then the gas guzzler tax and ADMs...

I too will build my own version that will have more hp (roushcharger) and cost much less. Yeah so it will depreciate more and be worth less than a true Shelby, but I won't have to worry about "messing it up" and ruining it's collectibility by modifying it.

To those that still plan to buy a Shelby GT, I don't mean to rain on your parade. The car itself is very nice and I love the concept, but for me personally, it's just not worth the current entry fee.

I'll be looking for a good deal on an 07 this summer or will just order an 08 just like I want it.

Why is there a gas guzzler tax? 20-25 more hp = gas guzzler?

What is the Gas Guzzler Tax?

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

* The combined fuel economy MPG value (55% city, 45% highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year, but it is not adjusted for in-use short fall. The unadjusted combined MPG of a vehicle can be approximated from the city and highway values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide and on this website by the following equation:

(1/(.495/City MPG + .351/Highway MPG)) + .15

Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.

Where did you get this price? Also what options did it have? The one I priced had all the goodies except the Nav sytem. It had the Shaker 1000 and the active anti-theft. It was $31965.00. Now add in the $7800 Shelby charge, the $1000 for the GGT, and then who knows on the ADM. Top it all off Id only get between 20 and 23 for mt trade in. I knew Id take a hit on that but to take a hit on that, pay MSRP , and then an ADM, I dont think so.

This is from a memo sent out to all Ford Dealerships. It's based on a base vehicle I believe.

The thing I feel badly about is I think this is going to turn alot of people away from Ford. Die hard people too. And it just sucks for great people like Amy B. She has been wonderful to deal with and has helped out with info and insight and I was really looking forward to buying this car even more because of that. In the end it isnt just about the $$ because that isnt a problem in my case. I just refuse to be screwed over on principle. It will be interesting to see the future of this program and what other cars come out through Shelby Auto.

I don't think Ford is the only one to blame for this. Shelby Autos has to be held accountable for this as well. Its their package that will be costing $7,390, and added to the price of the Mustang GT. They should have known to not price it too high, because all this is doing is turning people off and getting people really mad!!

Simple economics- supply and demand. When people stop paying those ridiculous surcharges/up-charges, they'll become more affordable. Ford did it with the 05s when they first came out. I paid nearly 5K less for my 07 than my friend paid for his 05. No way would I pay a penny over MSRP for anything regardless of how bad I wanted it . People talk about investments. There is no worse investment than a car. 99.9% of the "Shelby" buyers today are not going to keep their car in a garage for 30+ years- only then maybe it'll be worth what they paid for it... w/ inflation, they'll still be in the hole. The only person making a wise investment is Carroll Shelby. People have money to burn I guess .

Maybe the Gas Guzzler Tax is the Big Reason Ford Stuck with the 300hp Gt and was Slow to Boost it due to this! Since you can not Find a GT-500 For Sticker I am Loving My GT/CS Roushcharged! It is the Biggest Bang for the Buck at this time with a factory type warranty. Looks like a Shelby Gt will end up costing more and having Less Horsepower than I have. So I don't Have the Badges oh well!

Are you sure, this car has nothing on it at that price. The base GT Coupe Premium is 26,805.00 plus 54U GT Upfitter Package $2,140.00 Destination is $740.00, plus GGT $1,000 & Shelby Upgrade Package $7,400 = $38,085.00

Most people opted for 18G Interior Upgrade @ 460.00
Active Anit-Theft @ $325.00
Locking Wheel Kit (useless) @ $50.00
Sirius Radio @ $195.00

Just my thougts.....

No one has explained why the Shelby has the tax on it.
It has the same EPA as the regular GT as far as I have seen.
Does anyone have a sticker on these yet?

Ok this might clarify some of the confusion...

This is the Pricing Example Ford provided, if you build your Shelby with additional options it will cost more, also it does not include the destination charge or your local TTL.
Base Mustang GT Deluxe (manual)
$26,440
54U Upfitter's Package
$2,140
Shelby Automobiles, Inc
$7,390
Gas Guzzler Tax
$1,000
Total MSRP (incl gas guzzler tax)
$36,970

The Shelby GT is getting the Gas guzzler tax because its MPG is below 22.5 mpg. Go back and look at the chart on post #6 What is GGT?

Not to offend, but my figures came off the GT Premium 5 Speed, I didn't know it was even available as a Deluxe, my figures came off the DORA.

I know all about the GGT. That is why I have questions.
For instance, the Infinity M45 gets 17/23 and doesn't have the tax.
Why does an intake and exhaust give the Shelby GT worse mileage than that?
I can't believe they can't tune the car better than that.
