Hood vibration?

Hood vibration?
My 08 GT/CS freaked me out the other day. While driving into a mild headwind, the hood lifted up about 1/8-1/4" I thought I forgot to close it properly. I stopped and checked and it was closed and secured. On the road again and it started lifting again. Anyone have this problem????? All hood bolts are tight and nothing missing.

This problem seems to vary from car to car but rest assured, you are not alone. My hood lifted and shook like crazy at anything over 70 mph. I played with the stops, checked the latch, everything I could until finally I broke down and installed the Scott Drake hood pins. I was very nervous doing the install, but it came out great and now I have no shaking at all no matter what speeds. Previously I just avoided looking at my hood when on the freeway for peace of mind.

This is an old problem. Quite common.
Mine spooked me a couple times.
I adjusted the stops a little at a time until it went away.
I haven't noticed again in over 2 years.

hood shaking
Odd thing...The other day I moved my horns to a lower position behind the horse. It never made sense to put them in the path of airflow into radiator, I figured the center is partially blocked by horse anyway so why not put these here....anyhow after finishing, the hood really seemed more stable. I was on the highway, yes, but maybe.... no breeze...speed (doing about 70), cant say it was the horns causing turbulance instead of straight flow but it did seem more stable. I did move the front hood bumpers slightly, but yes..hood pins are a neccessity. The way the hood is designed (exception of Shelby's and 500's) with the overhang to catch wind is poor at best but always has. As an old GM man, they have hoods that fit flush to suface. I'll take pictures soon.

Yeah we get some very crazy hood flutter on those two lane highways, when ever a semi passes us just a little too close in a cross wind! Say I really like that horn relocation behind the pony idea. Will have to look into that this winter. Was thinking of lowering them both out of the the air flow anyway. Thanks for a little different idea on this one! CalStang

I had some hood flutter a while back and solved it easily by adjusting the bump stops up about half a turn. Try adjusting the stops up a little at a time until the hood no longer closes easily, then back them down just a bit. That will make sure the hood is tight against the bump stops and leaves no room for flutter. Worked like a charm for me and many others on the site.

Someone very close to me has had three S197s with never a flutter from the beginning, two of them to 120MPH and one to 143.3 (by GPS).
I wish there were a way to poll all S197 users to get an idea how prevalent the phlutter phenomenon is; Mustang forums just draw too many drivers who are likely to pay more attention than the general run of drivers.

OK, I have done extensive testing on several grilles. The issue is the amount of air getting into the engine bay with "free flowing" grilles. If you have the 9 or 13 bar grille and you drive 65 into a 20 MPH headwind (85MPH effectual) you will get the flutter.
I had to make "wing plates" to insert into my grille to stop the flutter as I didn't want pins. If you notice, the V6, GT, GT500, Miller Cup Car, etc. all have the area outside the "fogs" (or where they should be) covered. The Shelby GT and the aftermarket Roush or Shelby grilles leave the full area open.
I posted about a year ago when I was developing my new grille that Shelby's had an issue and since they don't do any testing before they release stuff, it's bound to be an issue. Nobody came forward at that time.

It has to do with the front of the hood being lifted by air at high speeds. The front catches the air. Of you adjust the bumpers it won't let it sit as high and usually ends the fluctuation.

Ha! Yeah, I need to take it to the track sometime. I don't like going too fast while sharing the road with idiot drivers. Know what I mean?

I hear ya! I wouldn't do it with drivers here in Florida...oh, did I call them drivers? I've been all over the world, but FL has got to have the worse drivers in the entire planet.
