Clear-coating over tape stripes?

Guys,

my body shop guy suggested painting some clear coat over my side stripes to protect them and eliminate the seam along the edges, where wax, dirt, etc. tends to accumulate.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I don't know? The GT/CS stripes might yellow as the years go on by? Then you could just replace them if that ever happened. But if you clear coat them you might be boned in the future? A real paint/stripes expert really needs to chime on this one. CalStang

I suppose I could always just replace them if need be.

When (no if here, definitely will) the vinyl starts to break down it will crack which will crack the clearcoat. Easier to replace the stripes down the road. If going through the headache of clearing them, why not just remove them and have the stripes painted on?

Having them painted on is definitely worth considering. Since they are still in good shape, I think it makes sense to wait until they NEED to be replaced.

You know, now that I think about it, I had a Honda Shadow Sabre motorcycle which had decals on the tank which were clear-coated over from the factory. I didn't keep the bike long enough to experience any deterioration issues, but just shows it's not an uncommon practice.
