Pup's interior accent project complete (for now)

Many of you may have already heard about mrmikes.com ... great stuff!

Well, my order for welt came in yesterday and I installed it today. The hardest part was coming up with the (IMHO) perfect shade of Grabber Orange using the acryllic paints I'd purchased last month in anticipation of this project. While they had 'pumpkin' as a premixed color, it was TOO orange. So I started with yellow and kept adding red until I got what I felt was the right shade.

The key is to mix the paint, then apply it to the welt and accelerate the drying process with a hair dryer. You know how paint can fool you. It looks great when wet, but then when it dries, it's 55 shades off of what you need. So mix, apply, dry, compare. Repeat as necessary. I did this alot for the final batch. Earlier batches were used as a base coat.

While I originally planned to do three coats, I decided on two and kept the remainder for touch-ups if I need it. Here are two shots, taken tonight just after the sun dipped out of sight.

You have to buy 60' from Mike. It takes 15' to do both front doors. Rear doors were not done. The wife liked it so much, I did all 4 of her doors on the Hyundai Tucson. She did not get the painted stuff, but rather the molded color which was redish orange (think Mustang Competition Orange, only more red). That kills the first 30'.

For the other 30' I had ordered a medium gray thinking if I did not like how the Grabber turned out, I'd have something to match the IUP. I have not dipped into that so if anyone wants 30' feet to play around with, I'm taking offers. If you want it for Grabber Orange, you gotta custom paint it anyhoo.

Hope you like it. Have a great week!

Cool Your extra welting

Stan, How close does it match the IUP? I've been looking at MrMikes for some of his welts, but haven't bit the bullet yet. My car is Alloy Grey, so bringing in the exterior color into my dark charcoal interior won't work, but I was thinking that using the IUP color for accent would be nice. If you think it is real close, let me know, maybe I'll take it off your hands!!John

That looks really hot!

Do you just stuff it in the gap there, or take the door panel out and attach it to the back?

Rich: Thank you...

Chris: You do NOT take out the door panel. I trimmed about 1/16th of an inch off the bottom and just stuffed it in. The trimming allow the welt to both fit snug and flush on the door. With what I received, if I didn't trim it, the piping appeared to 'stick out' away from the surface.

Mark: I wish they had a true grabber orange that matched right up, but they didn't. So I had to paint it. I think the extra time was worth it. The paint was only $2... a buck each for the yellow and the red. So it was not a cost factor. Just time consuming. But, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, eh?

Sandy: Thanks!

Jeff: Even though you guys were the first to do this mod, you should stop by mrmikes.com. He's got a link up there now for Mustangs and yours truly is the first car featured.

Be sure to take some rubbing alcohol and a rag and wipe down the entire length to get the mold release off of the welt first. I did the bead obviously, and about half the flange. This way, should it stick out just a smidge, you'll see Grabber Orange instead of the molded color...

Nice work, Stan. As you know, I opted for the "silver tinsel" welting, which I think is a nice match for the IUP satin silver elements.

Good luck to anyone else wanting the welt. Mr. Mikes is reluctant to dedicate any more time to selling the welt material, especially to the Mustang crowd. He focuses primarily on PT Cruiser interior accents.
