Turned down a Shelby
I turned down a Shelby GT500 the other day. Dealer finally called me up and told me I could have their first order. When I asked the price they told me they were asking 20k over sticker! With a fully loaded coupe running $42,000 that would make the final price $62,000. I thought about it for a few hours and told them that I would pass. Having to turn down the offer was so incredibly difficult. I think I might be kicking myself down the road.

I am under the opinion that eventually everyone who wants a GT500 will be able to get one. History is not on AMVs' side lasting for a long extended period of time. Will dealers and their sales reps want us to think they will? Absolutely. They want to gather as many pigeons as possible.
The reality is the cars are not here, enthusiasm is high, and the negatives of the car cannot be emphasized. Remember the '03s? The most powerful Mustang ever built? They were, until the cylinder heads were louder than blasting the Mach460.
I would say 90% of those who post in forums related to the GT500 are well informed, know what to expect, and share the opinion that no car is worth an AMV.

Yeah i think i did the right thing. And I agree that the more people that pay that much over sticker the longer it will go on. I was number 28 on that list and I was moved up to number one because 27 other people thought 20k over sticker was crazy. Hopefully dealers realize they can only go so far before loyal customers take their business elsewhere.

Glad to hear that. We will see that happening more and more. A few knuckleheads will pay 20k, afew 10k, then a few 5k, then a few 2k, etc. Eventually MSRP deals will be easy to come by. I think that will stick for a while. Late in '08 we'll see deals.

I'm hoping it happens sooner then later...I won't pay AMV, but I wonder how long the dealers will hold out for the next pigeon to come along.
I'd still like to order the Shelby my way instead of the dealer making the choices. I bet if you ask to order one they'll consider you the next pigeon and start their AMV markup routine again.....Maybe the 'on the lot' Shelby GT500s may someday come down to MSRP, but I bet the custom order ones will stay up there a good long time.

Agreed. This is one thing I have a hard time understanding. If you are going to pay this kind of money (even if its at MSRP), I sure would want it to be what I want.
Its like: Here is your car, your going to pay $20K over list and you will take what you get!

I finally made my deal for the '07 Shelby with my Powerlease letter. Ordered today at $1,000 over invoice. The dealer was fine with the deal once he confirmed it was not out of his allocated Shelbys. Still love my '04, but I figure I can drive this one and always get my money back.
