so I've seen a few of the "should I sell my classic for an S197" threads...but mine is more specific. I'm thinking I could sell my '65 and get a GT500...or at least be able to put a FAT down payment on it so I would more easily afford it...(assuming I can find one at MSRP of course)..OR...sell the '65, put the money in some kind of investment for a short term untill I find an MSRP deal or a nice low miles used one...so I guess I am asking if it would be worth it? I think the GT500 will always be worth more than the 65 will ever be worth unless I wreck it or something...but I run that same risk with the '65 too. Soo...which would you rather have?

I'd prefer the GT500, but you'll get plenty of people in favor of keeping the '65. If you're '65 were a 2+2 fastback, I'd likely keep it, but the notchbacks are plentiful and very easy to find should you ever feel the need to find and buy one again.

 

Having a classic is a novelty, sort of the same concept as having a diecast. I've expressed it before, the best of the '60s Mustangs doesn't come close to the '05 - '08 Mustang GT. The best way to have a classic is buying it new and taking good care of it.

 

I'd prefer the GT500 (obviously, that is what I bought instead of a classic). IF the '65 were more a special car, like a Shelby or low production model, then maybe keep the classic.

You can get a lot more use out of the GT500 and a lot more fun driving it.

Five Oh is right. If you had a 65 fastback or a SE of any kind I'd be in favor of keeping it. Get the GT500.

 

As much as I like the older ones, I'd say go with the GT500 if you can find one for sticker price. You'll very much enjoy it, and it will be worth more than a 65 coupe restomod. Once you modify an older car it loses value compared to what it could be if it were original.

 

My thoughts as well, and '65 Mustangs are my favorite.

you can never replace that ride once you sell it, if you gotta have a gt500, save up the cash and buy it in a few years, enjoy the 65 till then!!!

 

Trying to figure out how an "investment" will perform is a crap shoot. If we all knew, we'd all be filthy stinkin' rich. As far as the '65 is concerned, it's a pretty safe bet it will not depreciate. Now the new GT500. It's a car. It's new. It WILL depreciate in the near future. Eventually, it will bottom out as all cars do but with a collectible (subject to argument) it will slowly rise in value. This won't happen in the first ten to fifteen years. In these years, it WILL drop in value. There's no question here. The only unknown today is when it will start to slowly slip in value. So from a standpoint of which car to keep for "investment" purposes, it's a clear cut decision. The '65 rules.

 

I voted GT500. Think about what you like doing with the car - drive every day? Only to Mustang car shows? Personally, I like jumping in the car, turning the key and going.
The GT500 gives me pretty much all the latest technology (I don't want to get into an IRS discussion) along with reliability. Looks are a personal thing. It's all what floats your boat.

I wouldn't buy the GT500 as an investment.

Drive each for an hour, one after the other. You'll have the answer.

 

For an MSRP deal try looking on Teamshelby.com and get a GT500.

 

If your 65' is 100% stock and has all matching numbers on the engine etc. keep it. It'll be worth a mint. But you won't be driving it as much. My guess is if you buy the GT500 you won't be able to wipe the smile off your face for a long time! I voted GT500. As young as you are though Cody, check the insurance quotes first. Around here if you're under 25 the ins. premium would be steep.

 

I don't think you should be doing a poll on this.
You know that your current car is good and will hold about the same value for a while.
You know the other car is very expensive and you may have to hold on to it for a while to make your money back (minus insurance and taxes).
The GT500 will be worth more only because it costs more.
Just look at the cost of registering a GT500 vs. your current car.
That should be a hint.
Wait and think before you do anything else.

ok...thanks for the ideas...I'm not thinking to do anything soon...but maybe in the future i'll revisit the idea...the 65 doesnt cost me anything except insurance, gas, and garage space...the GT500 would be a little more...

 

the pain of missing the 65 will totally kill the buzz of owning the gt500
