I've just noticed something...

With the car on dealers’ lots for a week or two now not one person on this site has one. I may be mistaken but I don't see any posts saying look at my new Shelby. I wonder if these cars are getting into the hands of any real Mustang enthusiasts.

Real Mustang enthusiasts with tons of money to blow, and that probably don't mingle with us as a result.

I don't think that guy posts on here. The person that started that post was someone who knows of the guy who bought the car.

He's on here. He's new to the forums, but he's a member of my local Mustang club and I've known him 4-5 years. He's a true Mustang enthusiast. His collection includes a '79 Pace Car, '82 GT, '82 Turbo GT, SVO, 2001 Bullitt (with less than 1000 miles), 2003 Cobra convertible, 2003 Mach 1, 2004 Mach 1, and 1970 Boss 302. He also has a couple of '85 GT Verts and other stuff.

Definately an enthusiast... but with all those cars it seems he's exactly what TexasStang described... an enthusiast with tons of money to blow.

Most guys here I doubt have a "collection."

But cool he got one anyway I'd be interested to know what he paid for it.

I don't think he's "blowing" it. His Bullitt, Cobra, and Mach 1s all have less than 1000 miles on them. Some have less than 500 and are stored just as they came off the truck--with no dealer prep. It's a gorgeous collection that will one day be a virtual Mustang time machine.

Well when I wrote "blowing it" I was quoting TexasStang... although I didn't use quoatation marks... perhaps I should have.

Doesn't really matter to me what anyone does with their money. Plenty of people buy things I would never buy but it's not my money so...

As for his collection. Yes I'm sure it will be and is very nice. But that doesn't change the fact that he obviously has more money than most. The Mustang was originally built for those who didn't have more money than most... that was the point I was trying to make.

So what if the guy has "tons of money"? Good for him! And good job spending it, at least he shows he has taste and a passion.
I don't agree with those saying that the Mustangs should only be bought by enthusiasts with little money. I think it's a clear sign this car still holds its reputation, when it's bought by rich people too. This man bought the car because HE LIKED IT!
I agree that when some people accept to pay 60k+ for the Shelby kinda encourage the dealers to keep the prices up, but let's be realistic: was the '67 GT500 (at $4.2 k, only 2,084 built) really a car for "the masses", like the standard coupe ($2.4K, 325,853 built)? I don't think so.

"All have less that 1000 miles on them" So the Shelby will end up just sitting in a garage. This is what most people were talking about when the price of the car and markup put the car out of reach for the average guy. There is no doubt that your friend loves mustangs, but what good are they if you don't DRIVE them. I want to see those cars on the street and at the drag strip, not sitting in some guys garage.

Let's be honest for a minute. It has become apparent guys that the new Mustang was Fords way of getting into the Pockets of middle-aged men. Along the way some of us younger guys/gals were able to pickup a car when the hype settled down or we ran into a good deal. Basically the GT500 was supposed to be a best bang for the buck performance car for the middle class. However it has become a toy for the rich and collectors. Which totally defeats the point of why the car exists.

Well the only good thing about this would be for those who do get one and drive it they will be a rare sight.

Never looked at it that way... but I agree... I think you're absolutely right.

It took me more than a year after the new Mustang to come out to be able to afford one

And Louie I don't care that he has tons of money. I don't know for a fact that he does honestly. I don't know the man. Perhaps he's poor and mortgaged to the eyeballs... how should I know? I was quoting AND agreeing with what someone else wrote.

Do I think he has tons of money? Probably. As for your analogy to the older Shelby, yes I agree... it was priced higher for people who wanted the performance.

BUT the same year Corvette which is often compared to the Mustang was over 5K still more than a thousand dollars over what the Shelby was.

Run down to your local Corvette dealer and see how much you can pick up a new Vette for. It will be LESS than the price of a Shelby.

This very reason is why people are upset about the dealer markups.

Then pony up 65k and go buy one. I am pissed at Ford just like everyone else about the rape mark ups but I will not fault someone who is lucky enough to get one and doesnt want to drive it much. I can afford the mark up but Im not buying it on principle. If I did I wouldnt have many miles on it either, as it would be my summer ride. I just think we all need to remind ourselves it is other peoples business and to each his/her own

Exactly what gets me about the markup's as well. You have an awsome car at $43k and a not so hot performing car when the price is jacked up to $65k. It's almost as much as a Z06 yet can't beat a regular Vette in all areas but costs more then it.
