Hood Pins

Has anyone installed a set of the Scott Drake GT 500 billet aluminum hood pins (7R3Z-6316892500 - found on page 20 of the 2008 C/S catalog) yet? I have a set on order that should arrive this Tuesday.

I have not. I really like the look of them. Don't know if I could drill the holes in my hood, though.

+1, kinda scary any time you do something you can't easily reverse.

I put the Scott Drake/Shelby hood pins on my 2006 Mustang GT, which is now sold. The drilling and so forth was not a big deal -- I never did it before but just followed the directions closely and read the available posts on the subject. However, I did not think the mod improved the appearance of the car. The pins looked too big and clunky. The Drake/Shelby pins for the GT500 look about the same as the ones for the GT, so I will not be doing this mod on my GT500.

To anyone considering this mod here's some advice:
  • Run a tap through the 1/2" NF holes in the rivet nuts to clean up the threads. Do the same with a tap & die to the tooling to install the rivet nut. This will ensure there is no friction to cause problems during the installation of the rivet nut. Be sure to use some lubricant on the threads during the installation as the instructions call for.
  • Prior to permanently installing the rivet nut and beauty washers in the radiator core support, be sure the beauty washer is fully seated on the rivet nut's shoulder.
  • Prior to drilling the 4 holes in the hood, use a drill that is just small enough to fit through the 4 holes in the billet plates to accurately transfer the screw's hole pattern onto the hood. Then switch to the 1/16" drill as outlined in the instructions. The final hole size will need to be 7/64" for the screws to fit properly.
  • Prior to drilling the holes to secure the lanyards to the core support, be sure to install a stop on the drill bit to prevent the drill bit from puncturing the headlight housing
