1. When we can order a 2008 Shelby GT 500?
2. When they are scheduled to be built?

I have an e-mail from a dealership stating that IF they produce the 2008 Cobra (seems like they are unsure at this dealership), they will sell it to me for $10k over sticker.

I am hoping by the time April comes around that they will sell it closer to MSRP. However, my guess is that I am going to have to wait until fall 2008 if I want to get that price.

What are your thoughts?

BTW, I can purchase an '07 for $10k over sticker from the same dealership, but I would rather purchase an '08 at this point.

The time when prices come down will be when various dealers in different areas keep their GT500s in their inventories. There is one main road block in reaching that point. Dealers which don't get to sell their GT500s to the public due to the asking price have been selling them for less to other dealers in larger markets rather than sell them for the same price to locals, therefore keeping the prices up.

That is why some dealers have had several, as many as 12 in stock at different times.

They will come down eventually. Sooner or later the people willing to pay $10,000 over sticker will dry up. The cars will sit on the showroom floors and the price will fall. Hopefully, some of those bigger dealers will get stuck with 5 or 6 cars that they paid $10k or $20k over sticker for. If you follow ebay, you will see that the cars are not selling well on there. The sellers have set the reserves high and the buyers are only willing to pay so much. Right now that seems like about $10-12K. By the time 2008 cars are here, it should be a lot cheaper.

I hope you folks are right because it takes me a pretty long time to save up $10k - and the wife is starting to really want to redo the kitchen.

For the most part dealers were selling the GT500s to other dealers in the range of $3 - 7K as of last November rather than sell it themselves.

It has been well orchestrated collusion practice by Ford dealers which Ford decided to turn a blind eye to and assisted by good old ebay which even changed the practice of using bidder names and replaced them with bidder numbers, keeping the parade going.

I used to think this car was going to become easier to acquire - and I still think it will, eventually - but I am convinced now that it will take longer than many of us initially imagined.

Once the prices fall to MSRP, it will become equally difficult to get one, because the hordes of enthusiasts who have been patiently waiting for just that occurrence will come out of the woodwork FAST and scoop them quickly, perhaps even prompting a whole new kind of [unscrupulous] bidding war.

I therefore suspect that acquiring one of these AT ALL will remain a treasure hunt of sorts, even once the prices do fall to reasonable levels.

Here in Canuckistan, we are only getting about 400 units. So you can imagine how that's reinforcing dealer greed. In Vancouver, one dealer is still trying to coax $100K out of buyers, and charging over MSRP is against the law in BC. Go figure.

The consolation is the Shelby GT. All the hoopla, the bragging and promoting by Shelby Autos on their $600K sale has not prompted the projected avalanche of sales above MSRP the dealers hoped for.

There is a big difference between trying and succeeding. Ford and Shelby Autos played it smart, they are the ones charging the ADMs on this one.

George - Good point abouot the Shleby GTs. Even though this car was actually modified at the Shelby facility (using Ford Performance parts) - rather than haing "input" from Carol Shelby, the car is having a hard time selling for $1k-$2k above sticker. My guess is the Shelby GTs will be selling for below MSRP in no time.

FWIW: In the April issue of Mustang Enthusiast, there's an article on page 20 written by John M. Clor titled "Will a $36,970 Sticker for the 319hp Shelby GT Prove to be a Bust for the Buyers?"

a quote "The bad news is, collectors will get in the Shelby GT sales race early and keep prices high for a while. The good news for you is that the market for a $37,000 Mustang is only so big, and once it gets filled, prices (and with them, dealer markups) will surely drop."

You can NEVER order a Shelby GT500, according to the dealers. They are solely for the nuevo riche.

That's not happening, and for that matter, neither are GT500 owners tripping over themselves to get Shelby Autos' $11K 40th Anniversary upgrage package. People now are more interested in what a car actually is rather than the mystique it is supposed to have.

The market is different now. Carroll Shelby was original and king in the 60's. Now Shelby Autos lags behind the major Mustang tuners who actually design their own upgrades and are involved in racing.

This car is not about Shelby's ability to make a hot car. SVT made this car. It is a commemerative edition paying respect to the Shelby's of the 60s. This is no different than the Mach 1, Bullitt or BOSS cars. The name was put on there to sell cars.

IMO, C Shelby and his cars deserve respect for what they did for Mustangs in the '60s.
