5.4 Oil Capacity

Hi,

Sorry I searched couldn't find anything. How much oil do you put in these engines?

It is in your GT500 manual...

GT500 5.4
Oil capacity / type
6.5 quarts / Motorcraft 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil

Why they couldn't have designed in to the system another 1/2 quart, so We don't have to keep unsealed 1/2 quarts of $8 per quart Motorcraft 5W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil sitting around between oil changes is a mystery to me...

Good point. Is in 6.5 after you fill up the filter or including the filter fill up?

Yes the total system oil capacity is 6.5 quarts, including the filter, excluding spillage. It is published in the GT500 owners manual.

Here is a link to it also published on Fords website.

Take note the dipstick has a cross-hatched area (as most do) but is not labeled "Add 1 Qt" / "Full" on either end of the hatched area. When putting in 6.5 quarts, your level on the dipstick will be right in the middle of the hatched area. You can go 7.0 quarts which will put the level at the top of the hatched area but because the manual states 6.5 quarts, that's what I put in. I've never seen a dipstick that's unlabeled as this one is.

I would like for it to have been 6 qts even. I buy it by the case (12) and I have to buy an extra and split it.

7.5 quarts brings the oil to the full level when the filter is replaced.

I just did the first change, used Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Question I have is about the filter change. I had the "sleeve wrench" (KD I believe) that fits over the stock Ford filter, then was able to fit a 3/8" rachet into the "sleeve wrench" and undo the filter.

The "new" or aftermarket Motorcraft filter has a different pattern on the bottom (serrations instead of flats), but I had a "sleeve wrench" attachment that fit it also (been down this road with other Fords (ST & Mustang GT). My problem is I could now not fit my rachet into the "sleeve wrench" because of the clearance between the frame member and the new filter, which was slightly longer (I guess) than the original.

Anybody else?

I don't know what it is called, but, I use one of those that look like a metal strap with a handle on it. The strap tightens down to fit any filter size. It works very well.

My big complaint with changing the oil is the mess it makes. When taking the filter off it drains a ton. I have devised a system where I put a piece of cardboard under it like a chute to catch any I miss. Then I use a plastic shopping bag over the filter. I usually only have to clean up a few drops now, but, it is a hassle.

Fer crying out loud

Total system oil capacity is 6.5 quarts, that is TOTAL, as published by Ford and experienced first hand, period.

Why would anyone change their oil and not change their filter anyway? Besides the "short" filter does not hold an entire quart of oil. Try parking you car on a level surface before you check your oil next time fer crying out loud.

Overfilling an engine with oil is a big no no, especially if you are revving it up and running it hard.

But if you want to overfill yours by all means do so.

Sometimes things aren't so evident to me. Thanks for the advice. I'll pick up one of those wrenches.

You are right, it is 6.5 quarts. The dealer invoice for the oil change includes 7 quarts not 8 quarts as I thought and get the 1/2 quart that's left over.
