Because. Race cars have it. People want to feel like race car drivers. That is all.

when you walk up to your car it recognizes you and unlocks, then you get in and push the button and the car starts. No key necessary. It's one of those features that you get used to real quick.

I believe he was asking about adding on the Push-button Start to the 05-09 cars. Many luxury cars have this feature tied in with the keyless entry system that you are talking about, where you don't have to take the "key" out of your pocket to unlock the doors/start the car.

The feature he was asking about is a kit that many 05-09 guys have added, but you still have to insert the key into the ignition, turn once, then press the START button to start the engine. It looks kinda cool, and makes the car feel closer to a race car (the Ford GT and Honda S2000, as well as many Ferraris and high end sports cars had this feature), but it really doesn't serve a purpose other than recalling the racing history of those other cars. I don't remember off the top of my head exactly why race cars have this though.

My friend's several year old Toyota Prius has it, lol.

Yeah the Prius and several luxury manufacturers have had a similar feature. For the most part, they have the "keyless" push button starts, where you just walk up to the car, open the door, sit in the seat, press the button and you're on your way. I think you are right though, the Prius has a keycard style key that you insert, then you press the power button. This is because when you "start" a Prius from park, you don't actually start the ICE; the electric motor is turned on and will either a) be enough power to reverse out of the parking spot or b) be enough power to get you going from a stop. That's a different case altogether, as opposed to mimicking a race car.

I don't mind turning the key to start a car. The car is a machine, and mechanical mechanisms are (almost) always less risky/issue-prone than electronic technology.

I don't want a car that I have to push a button for 3 seconds to shut off, thank you very much.
