It's doable but they will charge you the freight charge on top of the existing one. It's a PITA though.

See if you can find a car in ~300 mile range and have them DX it.

Some dealers will eat part of the cost, others will pass it on to you. Here in MI, most dealers don't go out of the tri-state area (MI, OH, IN)

Are you wanting to trade a car in and that is why you want to go through the local dealer???

If not trading a car in then just buy it direct from the dealer who has the car and have them ship it straight to you.

Or better and cheaper, buy the car and hop a plane and go get it and drive it home.

Shipping will be anywhere from about $900 to $2500 depending on how fast you want it and covered or not.

Sell the current one, then buy the new one.

Call the dealer who has the one you want and see what they will do for your trade.

My neighbor who used to work for a Ford dealer told me that they can request a transfer, but the other dealership doesn't have to give it up.

Also the dealership makes more net profit for their own in-stock items, so having them bring in a car from another dealership = higher expenses for them = less discount they can give you.

+1. We trade inventory with most every Ford dealer in the NW, and we do a couple of trades each day here. We add a $100 surcharge onto our normal prices if we have to fetch a car from another dealer as it costs us more to do so, but that's only if the travel time is less than 3 hours each direction. Longer trips mean a bigger surcharge. Other dealers don't always cooperate, but 90% of the time they do, so we can almost always fetch the rig a customer wants.

Thats How I got my 2011 Gt loaded with all the goodies!! I was working with my dealer but he just didn't have the right combo I was looking for. I did a internet search and found the car I wanted in another city (about 1 hour away) They flatbed the GT to my dealer the next day. Got my Gt with Only 12 miles on her.

Check with them on the trade. I once drove to Texas from Florida for a motorcycle. It was well worth it.

I flew up to Minneapolis to get my Gen1 Lightning and drove back to Texas in it.

It's a great adventure, not so much in a new car with a warranty as in a 1994 Lightning with 119,000 miles on it already, but fun anyway!

I had our dealership trade in a new 2003 Mach 1 from out-of-state for me to buy back at the end of the 2003 model year (we were sold out and they were getting hard to find). It had 405 miles on it when I bought it, but still had the full warranty and factory rebates. Dealer trading is a great way to get what you want faster than waiting for a special order.

The dealer where we got my wife's Edge worked with us to get the options we wanted because they didn't have the right model on the lot. They found one in Oklahoma City and got it in and didn't charge us for it. Good guys.
