why in the world is there an antenna on the exterior of the mustang?
It's not so outdated, most cars now have them mounted on rear of the roof. GM is one of the few manufacturers that mounted the antenna in the glass. Having driven my Grandfathers Chevy's I can tell you the reception isn't as good as a fender mounted mast antenna.
I Really Love the fact that Ford moved the antenna to the right rear fender, In my opinion that's where it should have been all along. Now I can install a Power Retractable antenna back there so I can raise it when I want to listen to the Stereo, but when I'm listening to Cd/Mp-3's or just turn the stereo off completely to listen to the engine, it will disappear completely from sight, not even having to see the base sitting on my right front fender as on my T-Bird.

Looks better than the that darn Black Turtle on my rear deck for the Sirius Satelite reception.
And definately agree with the above mentioned post, about modding it to a retractable. Can't do that with it up front.

Because there's no other place to put it where its common between coupe and convertible. Since the roof, windshield glass, and convertible top are carryover from 2005, there was no glass to put it in.
And I agree, the glass mounted antennae suck for reception. My brother's Audi can't get a station to save its life.

Must be a problem with that particular Audi. Quite a few luxury cars have antennas in the glass and get great reception. Heck my 4Runner has a glass-mounted diversity antenna system and it gets better reception than any vehicle I've ever owned.
Quick question, where would the antenna be placed on the convertible?
Would they have to make two versions, one with the antenna in the glass and another on the fender?
Wouldn’t that cost more money?
I like the new antenna I think its 10 xs better than the flag pole that’s currently on the front of the car.
I think I read somewhere that they move the antenna towards the back to cut down on wind noise.

Trust me guys, you don't want it in the glass. My 07 Fusion has a rear glass antenna and it sucks. It was the 1st thing I complained about to my dealer after taking delivery. Most days its local channels only ... any FM channel over 60 miles away is hit and miss.
If antennas in the glass were crappy, you'd never see so many expensive cars still using them.
my theory is you need different antennas for different countries that use different radio frequencies. if that's the case, then prepping the car for a another country is just a matter of swapping the antenna. if the antenna is the glass then the manufacturer has to change the entire windshield. cars like the camry and accord have them in the glass because they are US domestic market only. anyway, that's my theory on the whole thing. as for expensive cars using them, don't BMW and Audi use fin antennas?

There's always that too. problem solved.

That'd be hideous!
