Just curious why the back, sides and front under body are all black? Is that plastic?

Yes, textured black plastic like you'll find on a lot of cars.

It's starting to grow on me but it was effecting the color choice I wanted.

I'm torn between black and torch red. I just sold my black camaro and chevy paint is terrible.

Good decesion. welcome

It's wear and tear moldings that aren't prone to chipping. Some hate it, some (like myself) don't think twice about it.
But it's there.

I'd go black... But I'm biased.

Thanks, didn't know that.

How is Ford's black paint? Is it cheap water based paint like chevy? My car will be garaged but also my daily driver, dust I can deal with. Swirl marks on the other hand

I'm swirl free. but very minor surface scratches, (i have 12k in miles) which I can polish out no problem.

The dust, stays on it as it would any car. Some orange peel effect- but not bad for my taste. The hood only has 1 minor chip, which I touched up as well with no problem- so it seems very resistant.

Here's a few pics of mine: https://themustangsource.com/showthread.php?t=479487

I thought it was also for styling. The black plastic makes the car seem smaller (shorter and more Pony car-like) than it actually is. Most people think the 2010+ S197 is smaller than the 2005-2009 S197, but in reality, they are almost the exact same length.

Thank you I can't believe no one said this. They made all the lower trim black to reduce visual mass and make the car look smaller!

Lol honestly I think Sterling Gray hides the black plastic best, but you wouldn't go wrong with any of the colors. Check out Karnutt's car for some Torch Red (similar to Race Red) car ****!

Why not Black/Red interior? Or what interior are you considering?

If and when I ever get one, a good part of the black lower panels will be painted body color, looks very good that way.

YES, Ford is using Water Based paint too ... at least this was the case in 2004. My '98 Mustang was still solvent based, so they made the switch some time in between.

If they went back to solvent based I'd certainly be pleased but I doubt it. I'd guess all auto mfr's. are using water-based now due to less harmfull fumes / emissions, and would not doubt if it were due to EPA rules.

I like the black leather 400a. Sorry "Race Red" I thought Torch was the new color.

My original paint scheme I had picked out was going to be Ford's pearl white color, with all the lower cladding painted glossy black. Then I'd add a CDC chin spoiler (painted same way) and then get Shelby Razors with glossy black lips and matching pearl white centers...

Mmmm that woulda been a nice car...

I have the race red and one of my concerns when I ordered it was the black plastic side piece and rear valence.
I had originally ordered a 2010 sterling grey because I thought it would look the best with the plastic and black stripes. Am planning on have the race red car tinted and painting black stripes on it. Talked to paint shop about having black pieces painted red but not sure I would like the look or if the paint would last.

Paint the black parts body coloured, and you'll see it looks HUGE. Especially the back end.

My wife even made the comment when we first saw them 'looks smaller than your 05'
It's a visual trick, and one a LOT of cars use now.

There's a white 2010 GT here in town that has all of the moldings painted to match. And yes, it looks MUCH bigger than my 2009. But it doesn't look bad. With the blue full-body stripes, it looks good.
