Why is this becoming a thing?

I've been seeing it more and more now. I know its "my car i'll do what i want to it" but in my teen years neon lights and other neon accents were considered rice material... now its spilling over into mustangs and other muscle cars.

There is a well respected cobra on instagram that is all about it and to me it detracts away from the car.

Am I the only one that is noticing this growing trend? And why is it growing? Is it due to the fact others are doing it and so you might as well too?

It's being going on with every type of car for many years now...perhaps you are just now noticing.

Not my speed at all, and I tend to walk right past any car that resembles a Christmas light show from hell, but good taste is in the eye of the owner.

Neon lights and such were a thing with street rodders/muscle cars long before the import scene took off. I used to have all kinds of neon lights on my blown F-150 at that time when it was still cool and unique. Like most trends, things can become played out over time.

I say it's your car, and do what you want with it

I think we all just really want to drive a spaceship. Admit it! It's 2014 and we should have these already.

It's because being gay is supposed to be more socially acceptable now.

To me it's like most things. If done in moderation it can look good.

Nah - halos an neon are crap, and overdone, exspecially by the Dodge and Camaro guys. It's a shame that Mustang guys are starting to do it too. They're just show ho's...

Blame the Camaro. The Halos started there. Is that your gripe?

Or are you talking about proper "rice" like neon lights under the running boards?

Halos started on BMWs, stock from the factory. I don't like halos on mustangs, but I've seen some with neons that I thought looked ok. Would I have on my own? Probably not. But a black car with dim silver neons done correctly to cast light and not show the bulb looked ok to me.

Just no...

The neon lights on cars date back to the old days when you had muscle cars and low riders everywhere in car shows. The gas crisis hit and many people weren't owning muscles cars as much so the thing to modify were Hondas and the like. Ricers took over many car shows and neon lights are a part of that. I don't mind some interior car lighting or even lighting in the grill area on mustangs but most of the time people get carried away. Even manufacturers (like Ford) are putting lights inside the cars. The neons and other lighting are all for that wow factor when someone sees or steps into your ride.

a lot of people are doing the whole LED accent lights behind the grill and vents and such. Also the colored halo rings in the headlights. Not a fan. Who knows why its becoming a fad! I mean, why is Fireball a fad now? It burns worse than higher ABV shots... I'd rather take a shot of straight Dark Eyes vodka than Fireball!!

This 100%.

I haven't seen neon on cars in a long time, except at car shows.

This Plasti-dip crap is getting out of hand. Can people not lay paint down properly? The "dip" is great if you want to test out an idea, but it looks like **** on cars.

I don't see why someone would pay 30-40k for a car, and then spray it with some rubber in a can.

I only did my lower valance because I hate the painted stock look. It's only temp until until I get my GT500 valance and catback. Quite honestly, the finish looks great, but it *feels* disgusting. It was my first time using dip, and I don't think I will again.

Anything else?
