It looked like the electric fuel pump was still feeding the fire, if so they had no chance of putting it out with what was available to them.

The car was a total loss the moment the fire started. That's how a car fire is treated.

I've been reading up on this since this thread started. They're trained to do it exactly like it was shown. And yes, it's keystone cops looking. But the truth is that until they knock the fire down/out, lifting the hood isn't gonna do any good, and would actually help feed the fire oxidizer.

Plus, the guy was running nitrous, which is an oxidizer. There isn't any way to stop that, just contain it. So you keep the hood down on the hook, and just spray and spray into it, hoping it stays contained.

The guys aren't there to save the car. Ever. They are there for people safety. The drivers, the workers, the people in the stands. And this is true for the fire department, even if you were right outside their door, they aren't going to save the car. It's auto-toast.

So remember that if (hopefully not 'when') your car catches fire, anywhere.. it's already a loss. Don't be a hero to save it. And *DON'T* pop the hood past the hooks. If it happens to get saved and you can rebuild it, great, otherwise... Keystone cops it is, and you go shopping for a new ride.
