what is your attitude when it comes to MPG

I live in New york city Queens and I get 13mpg on average. Just last night I put $20 89 octane gas into my mustang, went to the city, when I got back the gas light was on once again. I have the 2012 GT and it's suppose to get 17 in the city and 26 on the highway, this isn't the case. What do you guys think about mpg with this car?

Mileage in my depends on how spirited I drive it. If I am first off the line with medium peddle pressure, the cars mileage is low. If I drive my father in his lexus the mileage is higher.

I don't really care about MPG when I drive this car. I usually have my foot in it.

I didn't really concern myself with mpg when I bought my '11 5.0. I bought it for enjoyment and for driving when I want a "pick me up". It is not a daily driver in my case. I drove 300 miles this morning and averaged 24.5 mpg at 72 mph on the highway. As far as I'm concerned that's good for a 3.73. car...
I usually average around 18-20 in mixed mostly around town driving UNLESS I put too
much pressure on the right pedal. But I am guessing in NYC you aren't going to get good mileage unless you drice an eco-box ! ! Good Luck...

Will,

I'm out in Nassau county. Most of my driving is around town cruising about. I love to hear my exhaust so it gets the rev before taking off and the RPMs up around 3000 quite often. I can't stand coasting in this car with no sound. Without even really spooling it out I'm still in the 11-13MPG range on the gauge cluster. I also have 3.73s

Also, I highly doubt manufacturers test "city" MPG in areas like NYC and other big cities. In sure there's a definition of "city" out there that they have to follow. Probably something along the lines of a traffic light every 1/2 mile or so, not every 50 feet lol. Same goes with highway testing.

I'm just glad I didn't have to pay the gas guzzler tax cause I probably wouldn't be driving one if I did.

Post a pic of your car..

I don't even pay attention to it. If that is what I was concerned about when buying I would have bought a Focus.

Mine's my daily driver and I get about 17mpg on average. I don't do anything on purpose to get better or worse mileage, I just drive it the way I want. It's worth the money I spend on gas I can tell you that.

Didn't buy the car for the MPG, but it doesn't do bad when cruising on the autobahn, even as fast as I tend to drive. Around town I probably get between 13-15 MPG.

Seriously, the EPA stats listed on the window sticker are not real world, and have never been real world, going back to the first stickers. There are too many variances in locale, fuel, and driver's, for this information to be accurate, even temperature variations effect the actual MPG you will get. For instance, is your current fuel 10% ethanol, if so, your MPG will be less then with pure gas. Do you sit in heavy traffic, just idling? This will lower your average MPG. So the best answer is, if you are seriously looking at MPG, for a daily driver, in lieu of performance you may want to consider the V6 the next time or even the EcoBoast 4 which is rumored to be in the next generation Mustang. Acceptable performance with much improved MPG.

EPA does fuel mileage testing, not manufacturers.

Vehicles are tested in a lab, not on the road at all. The tests are computerized and are identical for all cars.

The "city" program is designed to simulate rush-hour driving, in which the vehicle is started with the engine cold and is driven in stop-and-go traffic with frequent idling. The car or truck is driven for 11 miles and makes 23 stops over the course of 31 minutes, with an average speed of 20 mph and a top speed of 56 mph. Also, after the stops, 10 of the restarts are made from 0 to 50 mph at 50% throttle.

During the "city" tests, the car is never pushed harder than 50% throttle. Air Conditioning and all accessories are turned off.

Once their test is done, the fuel milage is calculated and then REDUCED by 10%. That is the milage shown on the window.

I disagree. The new method is pretty accurate - on two of my cars.

My all around driving is about 75% highway/25% city and my 4.6L averages 23.5 month in month out. Sticker says city - 15 (12-18), highway 23 (19-27), combined is 18. I'm at 4200', have to go over a 5k pass in every direction (4th), and I take it to redline at least once/day.

When I'm out to play it goes down - like all city driving would, but with all the po po out trying to raise money right now, I often set cruise control on 62 out on the highway and just cruise. This is yesterday on level ground for the last 15 miles, about 1800', about 85 degrees, AC off, Costco 87 fuel.

Lovin' that 27 out of my V8!!

The mustang just isn't a mileage-conscious car. I would think someone trying to average more than 20mpg in the city at all is going to be frustrated.

You mean someone watches the MPG on a Mustang.....lol

Really, I just watch it to know nothing has changed over time. I run 16-17 in the city/combined driving. Get 26+ on the highway if careful. On a good day I can get 11-12 in the city....just depends on the number of Chevies out there....

I care about my a mpg's when I drive to and from work, not so much any other time. I try to drive so I don't have to stop for the red lights. I try to time them so they are green when I get to them.

I think the mpg given the performance is great. I get 18 according to the car and I use it as a daily driver. I also am heavy on the throttle when ever I feel like it. Which is fairly often (why not?). I have a stock '12 GTCS auto. Could be the car is optimistic?

Personally, I didn't buy a 5.0 to tread lightly, I bought it to guarantee that I can merge into any lane at any time, tear up the back roads at home in the green mountains, and put a big *** smile on my face every time I see an on ramp. I wouldn't blame anyone for being concerned about fuel economy, but the first thing I did was switch the information read out to distance left rather than average fuel economy.

Lots of good comments. IMO, the 302 gets way better mileage than the larger-displacement motors from Chevy & Dodge, and, of course, those cars are much heavier. Ya know, the 5.0 is a pretty high-tech motor, it has all of the major technological enhancements found on much more expensive cars, only thing missing is direct injection. For the Mustang GT - as sports GT car - with 400+ HP and tons of grunt, I'm pretty impressed with the mileage. And, as some have mentioned above, cruising on the highway (60-80 MPH) can yield 25+MPG. My driving is 75% city / 25% highway, and my instrument panel indicates 19MPG, not bad.

I really don't care about gas mileage. I bought the car to drive and not to worry about fuel consumption.
