Last year in my stock 2011 GT with Tune, MT82, and 3.08 gears, I was able to reach 171 mph @ 6600 rpm's in 5th before I gave up.
A stock 5.0 really doesn't like that speed though, hood bulging, drive shaft vibration, reaching powerband limit, etc...
If you want to build a 5.0 for Texas Mile type events, you're going to need to start with a Tremec T56 or TR6060 transmission with 3.31 gears or higher depending on how you're making the extra power.

Mustangs have been able to reach 150+ for many years with far less power.
I have driven many mustangs over the years on the autobahn......trust me.

Oh yeah you would go to jail no doubt, I believe if you double the speed limits it's considered wreckless driving and you you get sent to jail, unless you get real lucky and get an awesome cop. I was just saying I'd love to see the reaction.

I hit the speed limiter in my dead stock 2012 Boss 302 on the nice, safe Bonneville salt flats. The Boss only has 20(?) more horsepower than the 2013 GT? It's a safe bet the GT can hit its speed limiter.
I'm also looking for the real top speeds.

We had a guy on the autobahn hit 174 confirmed by GPS. Said the car had some more in it but road conditions ahead wouldn't support any more speed.
For comparison, with the limiter removed a stock 370Z (.29 drag coef) can do approximately 168 mph before it can't go any further.

I rented a convertible Mustang (or similar) from Budget in SLC, UT. I couldn't believe it when I showed up and they had a brand new 2013 GT with 800 miles on it waiting for me.
At Bonneville, I can verify it will struggle to exceed 140 MPH indicated in top gear (6 speed auto). I was a little disappointed, considering right after high school a friend of mine had a brand new '93 Mustang Cobra and I recall it going about 145 with three large people in it. That is with almost 200 less HP. Maybe this rental car had a limiter? It didn't seem to have a hard stop at 140, but rather slowly built up to 140, and felt like it didn't have the yarbles to go any faster. Yes, it was an auto and yes it was a convertible, but 140 seemed a little slow in any event for a car that supposedly has 420 HP. It was awesome to drive though, and I can definitely see owning one in a few years when my mid-life crisis hits full stride.
This is my first post because I wanted to share my experience as an actual user. I have always loved Mustangs and am not trying to be negative, just giving an honest report. Also, could just be nostalgia, but it didn't sound as good as a 302 Windsor.

Most modern cars will not achieve max speed in the top gear since they are almost universally overdrive which results in a reduction in RWHP.
You would have to take a look at the gear spread on the auto and see where it approaches the most favorable ratio (probably the one as close to 1:1 as possible). Then there are the vagaries of the torque converter and hydrualic fluid which probably effect the top speed moreso than in a manual.
In my car, max speed is achieved in 5th gear (Popular Mechanics cut off the speed limiter and ran one to 183 mph, they tested an unfettered Camaro SS as well and it ran 174 IIRC)

The speed "limiter", that has been mentioned numerous times in this thread, is it hardware or software based? Is the "limiter" installed on every GT by the factory? How is the "limiter" removed or disabled?

I believe i read somewhere that the top speed is power/aerodynamically limited to around 175 on a 2013 GT which supposedly is slightly higher because of aero then the 2011-2012.

I was able to reach 165 Mustang 2011 GT 5.0 auto gear ratio 3.15 at 5.600 rpm 5th.
Now i want to know wichs is the top rpms Mustang GT 5.0 2013 manual 3.55 6th reach in order to
check 420 hp (not the top speed 5th).
