Just switched to Mobil 1 and a FRPP filter...

 

Mobil 1 is no longer full synthetic.

I use Castrol Edge with Syntec now. My dad worked in the oil industry for 35 years, and his opinion matters to me. He says since Mobil 1 is no longer full synthetic, and the base stock is now poorer quality, Castrol Edge is the best option besides the hard to get full syn amsoil.

Why don't all of you just go in when your oil change guage tells you to? I will go in when the oil life % hits 0... No sooner, no later.

 

It's like waiting for someone to tell you : "you stink" before taking a shower. I like taking a shower whenever i feel like to. Same for my car's oil.

I can dig you guys doing 3k oil changes and some call it cheap ins but figure over 100k miles at 25 an oil change it would cost 8333.33. If you changed your oil every 5500 instead of at 3k miles it would cost you 4545.45... no small change in my book. Keep in mind most any oil is still doing a good job at 5k miles. That is from someone that does oil analysis for a living. 3700 bucks you could by your wife or GF something nice for your car for that kind of cash.

 

I think your math might be off, 100k is 100,000 miles I assume. in 100,000 miles at 3000 miles per oil change I would only do 33.33 oil changes. even at $42 a pop thats only $1400. About $6933 less than your $8333.33.

Personally, taking my car to the dealer every 3000 miles, I would only pay $1050.03.........

 

**** they are some expensive oil changes. Must have gold plated oil filters lol.

 

Plus the 5.0 has that large pan. 8 qts still has a lot of life in it and is a waste to change every 3000 miles just because of the 'old' rule of thumb.

No, its like someone at the soap company telling you that it takes 4 showers a day to be at your cleanest, but you then think "I feel clean after 2 and any more is a waste of soap". With the way tech is today, I will put my trust in the cpu and its algorithems rather than the antiquated notions from the companies selling the oil...

 

Ive been thinking about giving redline oil a try. I've read a lot on different forums about cars running redline actually gain whp by changing to that oil, not to mention whatever other benefits the has. Also it's a basestock IV, I also think royal purple starts out as a basestock IV as well.

 

Where did you hear Mobil1 is no longer full synthetic? I just checked their web site and they still claim their oils are full synthetic.

 

Mobil 1 synthetic is base 3 stock( still very good up to 10k). I would change it a little more frequent. The oil life computer will put you where you need to be ~ 8000 miles depending on driving style. Amsoil, royal purple, Mobil 1 extended performance is base 4 stock. If you don't race your car, 10k oil changes Will work great with these oils. I personally changed mine at 1k with mobil 1 after a hardcore break-in. I Put on the tune at 1200mi and will change the oil at 5 k and then 10 k. After that, it will be every 10k with a base 4 oil or what the oil life monitor says depending if I have driven it very hard during that duration.

 

It's not the oil company's that started this 3000 mile thing, it's the quick lubes. My opinion is that when the engines in cars started lasting longer (over 100k for ex.), people attributed it to the fact that the quick lubes were shortening the oil change interval not that the engines were just being manufactured to better and closer tolerances.
