What is this for?

I'm actually doing much better now that I've been driving the car for a year and half or so. I've heard about using the emergency brake method but never used it.

Really? I have never ever had to do this, even when off road in my Jeep stopped on a steep hill. I admit some were not the smoothest but I can always get the job done.

Yes there is - You hold the hand brake (emergency brake if you like) and as you apply a little power and release the clutch you also let down on the hand brake and bingo you move up the hill without rolling backwards.

I was wrong. Thanks.
Using Hill Start Assist
Note: If the engine is revved excessively, hill start assist will be
deactivated.
1. Press the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a complete standstill.
Keep the brake pedal pressed.
2. If the sensors detect that the vehicle is on a slope, the hill start assist
feature will be activated automatically.
3. When you remove your foot from the brake pedal, the vehicle will
remain on the slope without rolling away for approximately two or three
seconds. This hold time will automatically be extended if you are in the
process of driving off.
4. Drive off in the normal manner. The brakes will be released
automatically.

Well I know in the UK I had to do the road test to convert my license when I was there for a while working and a "hill start" was required and if you stalled or rolled back so much as a hair width you failed. Use of the E brake is the correct method there.
