Wait a minute there......

I thought sequential turn lights where unique to the Mustang but today I got a big surprise. I was driving behind a Challenger SRT-8 and noticed that it also has sequential lights Both sides also activate when braking which I think look pretty cool. Is this an after market add on or they come like that from the factory?

Not sure why but it kind of bothers me a little

Aftermarket and when they come on with the brake lights are illegal also if a Cop wants to be a jerk about it.

Then that would make Mercury Cougars from the 60's illegal.

Mid to late 60's Chargers had Sequential Taillights ('66 and/or 67 I think), never knew this until recently.

Cougars / T-Birds from the 60's did not "sequence" when applying the brakes like these aftermarket kits do ... this is what he is claiming to be illegal.

I had them on both my '98 & '04 for 12 years / over 260k miles total and never got stopped because of the "initial sequence" when braking.

Maybe not illegal in Illinois & Wisconsin, or they just don't care ... or it could be that I try to only touch my brake pedal when I need to stop / really slow down, not every time someone in front of me does or for no apparent reason like most people on the road do.

So I hate to be sarcastic, but if every car in the world copied some form of the current Mustang's tail lights sequence, would Ford start lambasting the auto industry, or welcome a feature that started trend and possibly a safety feature?

Guess what I'm saying is, while I like a somewhat unique feature on the Mustang's current tail lights, who cares if it gets copied, we all know where it started?

You mean if the seqential turns on when you apply the brake ONLY? Because if you're braking AND have the signal on, your Mustang is flashing. And if they're not supposed to, then mine is broken... because I backed up to a wall this morning and checked it out.

I know on my 73 Cougar, all 3 bulbs on both sides lit up at the same time when you hit the brakes, as well as the T-Birds, Shelby's and the California Special Mustangs that came out with Sequential Turn Signals.
Mercedes had to get special Permission to import a car that the 3rd brake light flashed on from the Feds, so it is Federal Law
S5.5.10 The wiring requirements for lighting equipment in use are:
(a) Turn signal lamps, hazard warning signal lamps, and school bus warning lamps shall be wired to flash;
(b) Headlamps and side marker lamps may be wired to flash for signaling purposes;
(c) A motorcycle headlamp may be wired to allow either its upper beam or its lower beam, but not both, to modulate from a higher intensity to a lower intensity in accordance with section S5.6;
(d) All other lamps shall be wired to be steady-burning

At that Point it is being used as a turn signal, allowed to flash, while the brake light lights up with all 3 bulbs coming on at the same time, not sequential.
