v6 engine tick - cold start

I have read on a bunch of other mustang forums that people are experiencing a very loud ticking noise coming from the left side of the engine (drivers side) usually on a cold start. Apparently ford has been identified about the problem but they have no solution yet. I have tried listening for this tick in my engine and i think i can slightly hear it when standing outside of the car near the drivers door. However it is not nearly as loud as some have described. I have seen videos of people trying to document the ticking, and it seems much louder in their videos than mine... Although people are saying that it get louder with time and mileage. ( i only have 500 miles on mine) So my question to you guys is, have you experienced such a thing? and what are your thoughts on the matter? - Thanks in advance

Everyone needs to understand and keep in mind that the 3.7, and all the other versions of this engine family, are mechanical cam motors. That is to say that there is no hydraulic lash adjustment that takes up the clearance in the valvetrain like there is in the 5.0 V8 or in the revious years 4.0 V6 or 4.6 V8. The cam rides directly on the bucket on top of the valves and has a little bit of lash clearance built in to allow for thermal expansion.

What this means is that the motor will have more valve noise than other motors.

So, unless the noise is really loud then you have no problem.

Also, this problem is suppose to be limited to pre-June the 10th on back. Early built Mustang 3.7's. If you look under the warrany and service section of this forum you will see the service message posted by Ford. These engines may make some noise, but mine is affected with this and the passenger side is as quiet as I have ever heard, and the drivers side comes and goes, sometimes very loud and noticeable and sometimes not as bad at all. If you have an early built Pre-June 10th, and it does start you will notice the difference. This is a distinctive single sounding Tick or Tapping sound, on the drivers side only. At least that's what mine does, and did not do when I first purchased it. I now have 2700 miles on mine. Car runs great though. If you do not hear this, I would not worry about it at all. My wifes 2009 Honda CRV is really noisey.

I have an early build V-6. Just normal ticking sounds (fuel injectors, etc.). I did notice when i installed my engine cover, the tickings sounds got close to 25% quieter

I have heard the noise from time to time. While I find it slightly annoying I have not taken it in for service. So far I had the oil changed and it seemed to make little or no noticeable difference. I had the oil changed at 5000 miles. I will see what happens in the next few months.

Mine has a nice little metal tick (sounds like a lifter) just during warm up. I hear it every morning during the warm up cycle. After about 2 minutes it's gone. I think Ltngdrvr explained whast it likely is very well.
