I was taking the upper control arm off and one of the bolts broke off inside. Any one know how to get it out? Drill and bolt out seems to break. Not sure what grade of bolt ford used. We have only been able to drill out 1/3 inch of the bolt.

Can a dealer fix this? Is it even safe to drive with two of the 3 bots. It's one of the 2 smaller front ones

 

I would say it's not that safe to drive, no.

Are you talking about the bolts that bolt from underneath, up into the body? The ones that hold up the bracket for the upper rear control arm? One of those? Not the one that bolts in from above, under the seat? And not one of the ones going side to side for the arm itself?

Just trying to be sure which you're talking about.

Yes, a dealer will be *more* than happy to charge you for that repair.

Dealer Is 5 mins down the road with speed limits 45 or under. Could have someone follow me with flashers and keep it under 25

 

Get yourself a good carbide cutter. If you have a good size compressor I would say grind it out with a die grinder and carbide cutter bit.

I good ball style cutter would get it out. Will take time. The other way is to burn it out.

Have you tried heating up the shaft that it is broken in and then tapping it out with a punch and hammer? If you could get the shaft to swell up a bit with heat that may allow for it to slide out with some persuasion.

 

Thanks for the advice. I was able to drill it out, it took a few hours but I got it out. Used a little heat, and a bolt extractor and was able to get it out.

 

Still would like to see pix of the problem! Never heard of that before.

 

Glad it worked out for you. Those bolts are tough. You must have been drilling for a while.
