Updated BOSS Engines Info/Speculation
From Fourcam330:
Word is the 5.4 4v orginally planned was scrapped in favor of a new engine/series of OHC/2V (no 4v) motors named, you guessed it, "Boss". They will be between 5.8 and 6.4L in size and are based off the now defunct (it's 100% dead) Hurricane series. As you might have guessed along with the displacement bump, bore spacing is also much larger than in Modulars.
I think they're going to make a lot of people happy. A large bore OHC motor isn't all bad, despite the fact it only has two valves (difference being two large valves because of the bore), remember the 427 cammer?
I have to belive that some higher tech features like variable valve timing and possibly direct injection will make their way onto these motors (this is purely speculation on my part) as they will be needed to pass stricter emissions regs in the years to come.
I would also have to belive that at some point a 4v head would show up. Remember when the 2v Modulars debuted in MY '91 (late '90) in Crown Vics/Grand Marquis/Town Cars. 4Vs didn't follow until MY '93 (late '92) when the Mark VIIIs came out.

Variable timing is almost a given knowing today's market and direct-injection would be very welcome. If they're smart they'll have some sort of variable displacement available on this series as well. Anyone know if this is a totally Ford-NA developement or if they're working with their partners like Yamaha and Zee Germans?
"Hurricane" could not survive as a baseline-6.2L series with the market this way. Sure it would posses God's Own Torque, but it would suck gas like a GT and take up gobs of space. A baseline-5.8L is more reasonable and comparable to the HEMI, while the new Diesels will take over truck duty.
Hurricane is dead, long live the BOSS.

I'm guessing this motor will debut in the reskinned F150. Even with 2V, it will be capable of very good numbers if designed right.
I'm sure that 3V heads are in the cards, especially on a Mustang, and who's to say a DOHC model cannot be done.

Needs to be more Astony
yipee. i want a 5.8L or 6.2L !! only downside is 2v heads..i was hoping for 3v. I could care less about 4v since they have way to many parts and weigh to much.

I would love to see what the current 3V design head would flow with more cylinder bore and the appropriate amount of port volume increase to support more cubes. I favor the simplicity and compactness of the SOHC 3V over the DOHC 4V, although there is more potential with the 4V.

there is no need for 4v's I don't even think that the Ford GT cylinder heads flow as much as the LS7 heads do on the current Z06.
i think the LS7 heads are rated 380 cfm!

A small increase in bore can greatly increase air flow due to the increased valve size. Area is a square law function. That is a 10% increase in valve diameter gives a 21% increase in valve area. Since the valve stem diameter is constant and due to the properties of air flowing through a restiction, a 10% increase in valve diameter can give up to a 30% increase in air flow (other factors constant, such as cam lift, etc.).

It occurs to me that a 2v cylinderhead enjoys a freedom of design that its multivalve counterpart cannot when it comes to chamber/port design.
Multivalve heads can flow killer amounts of air, but the trade off seems to be big airflow for reduced airflow management.

From GuionM on Z28Camaro (update)
A quick tidbit on Ford's new V8 engines.....
....... instead of being called "Hurricane", they will now be known as the "Boss V8s" .
Debut in 2008 in the new F series, then will move to both the Crown Vic and Mustang for the 2010 model year.
There is a special version Mustang still scheduled to wear the name in 2009MY, but it's my own opinion that isn't definate.

Most of that is as expected, though the conflict between the "Boss Mustang" and "Boss V8"-equipped Mustang is intresting. Maybe they can still call the 09 Bullit....
And WOW, the BOSS will make it into the Crown Vic? Give it the right look and a new name and Ford will have a pretty vair Big Sedan entry....even with its Ancient platform.

Not necessarily...
The future mustangs will probably have the BOSS engines in them..
but the current platform was RUMOURED to have a BOSS Special Edition.
People seem to think its in 08 or 09 or both.
We'll have to wait and see now shall we
