And I take it that you think Ford is going to cover your engine repair once they decide you screwed up the engine from use on a track, how nice.

Absolutely not, which is why my engine is filled with Motorcraft 5W-50. To me, the few bucks you'd save on oil cost isn't worth the risk of having your powertrain warranty voided.

That being said, do I think switching to a name brand synthetic 30W or 40W (like many forum members have already done) will have a negative effect on the engine, no I don't.

There are several threads that address this. The engine has a specific calibration for the Ti-VCT timing to work with the 5w-50 oil. I wouldn't recommend you taking the chance by changing oil weights to save a buck.

I couldn't say one way or the other. It may be more of a protection strategy to compliment the oil weight and the intended use of the vehicle.

there are several people running 0-30, 5-30, 10-30, and 10-40 in their 5.0's with track packs. considering the oil rapidly sheers to a 40W, running a 5-50 oil doesnt matter. really ford motorcraft 5-50 is a 5-40. also that ford motorcraft is a synthetic blend, there a better choices out there.

most people are not changing from factory oil to save money. they are changing for better protection and higher quality of oil.

The 5w-50 is a full synthetic, but the 5w-20 is a syn blend. Where are you finding evidence of shearing of oil?

UOA's, mostly.

Forgive the link to another forum, but SVT Performance has a specific sub-forum just on oil tech. Here's one thread out of several (many?) on the issue of "what oil?" to use in Ford V8s:

http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...l#post10486198

Quoting one important line:

cSt@100*C

Amsoil - Virgin (18.9) after 2,000 miles UOA and graph below (17.5)
Motorcraft (5w-50) - Virgin (21.0) 2,000 miles (~12.89-13.5)
After only 2000 miles, the MC 5w-50 cST 100* has dropped from 21 to only ~13; that means it's basically a 40 weight oil at that point. Run it to the full ~7500 oci, and it's going to shear even further.

The modular Ford V8s simply cannot be as oil viscosity sensitive as some want to imply, because the oil Ford itself recommends isn't viscosity stable. MC 5w-50 starts off a 50-weight, then shears to a 40, and on to a 30-weight. If the motor couldn't handle ALL of those viscosities just fine, MC 5W-50 couldn't be used in it.

Here you go

http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...oa-thread.html

I am running 10-40 Royal Purple in my Boss 302. Had my own Motorcrap results updated in the above thread. Will run another result at the same mileage interval and see how it compares. I guaran-freakin-tee the RP will kick the bleep out of the Motorcrap.

p.s.

Only Gabe would have a custom blend of oil, made for him with his name on the jug.

+1

Same as Ford recommending 5w30 in Aussie land. 5w20 is for cafe when 5w30 is likely a better choice for engine longevity. Ford is worried about their bottom line and not how long your engine lasts. Not that 5w20 is bad at all but there are better choices just like there are better choices than motorcraft 5w50 oil that shears so quickly.

I dont care what anybody does but just because a manual says something it does not make it gospel.

And you are the reason warranty claims are higher on such cars, because you think you know it all, when really you dont know much of anything about oil from the comment you made "This guy has no clue what he's talking about"

Trust me I am sure I have many years on you as you are probably a kid that think he knows everything with a comment like this "I run Gatorade orange flavor, I'm golden" "You must have an engineering degree"NOT.. I do not have an engineering degree that's why I stick to what I know. So if the ford "engineers" say to run 5W50 oil that's what I'm going run.
