This topic has been discussed but here is my version of the solution; I thought it would interesting to share.

Since I use 3 sets of wheels and tires for my 11 GT (Summer, Track & Winter), buying another 2 sets of TPMS sensors plus the reset tool was a little too expensive especially for someone who checks his pressures regularly !

The solution ... remove the OEM TPMS sensors, stick them in 2.5" diameter ABS pipe with one of the ends drilled for a tire valve, put 35 lbs of pressure and stick them in your trunk ... problem solved

I added a little personnalized touch to it !



A little velcro to hold it in place in the trunk with the spare:

He took of his TPMS sensors and put them in the pressurized tube so he can swap wheels without the car screaming that all his tires are flat (or that the TPMS system is broken). It's a big win all round.

5. Now take your new friend for a ride. I let him ride shotgun since he is so pimp looking, and it also lets other people know that I am not messing around with the NOS stickers all over it. Honda civic owners get really jealous when they see this.

 

I would disagree with that, its a clever trick but thats about it.

A pressurized tube does nothing to warn you about the tire that is critically low (that'd be 20% under the cold inflation pressure btw) as you rocket into your favorite turn going really fast due to the puncture you picked up a half mile back.

TPMS sensors where introduced as a nanny for the lowest commmon denomenator, there is no denying that, but they still bring something to the table when it comes to real-time monitoring of the tire pressure (I have yet to met the person who checks thier tire pressure every single time they stop or routinely pulls over to check thier air pressure).

IMO, cheap insurance, I plan on upgrading to the FRPP 19" PP wheels due to limited tire selection on the stock 285/45R18 rears and I'll convert the old 18's for drag duty, but for around 200 bucks or so at a Costco, I can get 4 new sensors, the bands, and have the sensors relearned anytime I have the wheels swapped for free.

thats not even getting into the sticky legal situation if you guys injure somebody else on the road due to a tire failure or sell the car without reinstalling the sensors for the purchasers after defeating a federally mandated safety system.

 

True, but on the other hand if he didn't do this and his PVC tube leaked, he would never know it. And this way he will still know even if 3 of the 4 sensors failed to report the low pressure.

 

I think T-PMS is necessary for women. Who never check their air much less their oil.

 

Or their headlight fluid....

 

When the sensors go bad, the TPMS light illuminates (probably flashes as opposed to staying continually on), the only normal driving situation that would cause the sensor not to report is if they go to sleep to preserve the battery, but a few cylces should wake them up and report pressure (interestingly the sensors report tempurature and pressure)

BTW, I made a mistake earlier its 300 or so bucks at Costco for the 05-09 sensors (plus straps (4), saddles (4), and clips (8)) and 200 or so bucks for the 2010+ sensors since they mount to the stem.

 

You know, back in the old days we a lot more trouble with those old bias-ply tires. The tires actually went flat quicker. Having a spare was very important.

In my decades of experience, most of the time flats occur in 1 of 2 ways:
.
1) Bam... my tire ran over a spike or something and blew out immediately.
.
2) I get a screw or something and it creates a very slow leak or seals itself
In the old days, this would cause your tire to go flat within seconds. Today's modern steel belted radial tires usually just develop a slow leak when penetrated. I see it is low the next morning, or when I get home, or a week later when it doesn't leak at all and I finally see the screw in the tire.
TPMS is for little old ladies.

 

So I guess if you had the BAND Style you could just put 4 of the Sensors on one band on the Spare as well. Not that I say it's ok to do but just for conversations sake.
