Tired of the rusty differential...

My car was never winter driven (Canada) and seldom saw rain. So when I was in the process of installing my rear springs and shocks, I was surprised at the appearance of the axle assembly... looks like a junkyard piece with all that rust! Why Ford never paints axle assemblies is beyond me. So I decided to pull my diff to paint and gear change.

Old: rusty crap with 3.55

New: Por15 semigloss black with 4.10 and Ford Racing aluminum differential cover

I'm so happy with the new look. Can't wait to install it and try it out too

Yeah, I really like it. I did the same treatment on my old 73 Dodge Charger with the 8 3/4 axle about 10 years ago. Looked like new even after 8 years and about 10,000 miles.
Just gotta keep it off your skin

Wow that's really neat. I agree with you, it just naturally rusts because Ford doesn't do any treatment/paint/etc. to it prior to customer.

Curious, how much did that cost you in terms of hours and $$$?

It also acts as a layer to prevent bad rust from forming. It is just a surface layer.

Also, mine came painted from the factory

Looks good though! Nice job

Sean... how did yours come painted? Do all Boss's come that way?

Also, side note... can you please pm me or post a thread that has a video of your exhaust setup, idling, accelerating, etc? Reason is because you have the exact setup I am about to get in spring. Kooks LT's, H quad hi flow cat pipes, side pipes. Only difference will be I'm blown versus you NA, but I think the sound will be similar. What's your axleback though?

Would appreciate the vids. Thanks.

Not sure about Boss's, but my 500 came painted too. I remember talk a few years ago on here about GT/V6 not being painted but 500's were. My SGT and GT/CS were not painted.

My 2016 GT has paint everywhere in the underbody. And the lower rear suspension arms are Aluminum, as is the differential (Auto only).
It looks great and should stay that way for a long time.

To the OP, it looks like you are doing a great job. Should give you a lot of satisfaction.

I concur. About 3 years ago I replaced my stock rear end with the boss/ GT500 set up with 3.73 gears and it also was painted black and after all this time still looks brand-new

Nice work OP looks great. Sadly, the 07-09 GT500's weren't painted from the factory either.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!
I have been working on it for the last week, off and on, about 2 hours every day. In total, including the gear change and rebuild of the limited-slip it has taken me about 12 hours of total time. Just to paint the diff, without gear change would probably take a weekend (2 hours to remove, 2 hours to prep and paint, 24 hours dry time and 2 hours to reinstall.
I am really happy with the results

^ yeah my 12 5.0 does NOT look like that above. It's definitely a perk for getting a Boss or a Shelby. Nice!

I would but you see the way my engine is set up, it is in the garage and my car is in the driveway haha. As soon as I get it up and running though I will shoot you a PM in case you haven't gone with your setup.

Great job, looks fantastic! Glad I have a track pack and don't have to do this. Sure wouldn't want the before pic.
