Much as I am not a VW fan, their rust warranty is pretty amazing. 10 years, covers all rust. Buddy of mine that lives in Wisconsin (rust central!) had a 2006 Passat wagon with 150K miles on it. Had pretty significant surface rust on both rear wheelwells, as is typical for a car that age/mileage. VW replaced both rear quarters at zero cost. Pretty awesome warranty.

 

Perhaps, but you have to realize that Ford (and all other car makers) are in business to make money. Keeping their customers happy is secondary to making money and is not even considered unless the level of customer satisfaction will impact the bottom line more than the cost of the change. So if they can keep selling cars without spending money on fixing hoods then that's what they will do. It just a fact of the market. It was taken to extremes when Ford decided that settling lawsuits over exploding Pintos would be cheaper than changing the design (or GM decided not to fix ignition switches) - but the concept is still the same.

 

My fiancee owns a 2007 Mustang GT with only 18,000 miles on it which you can see by the mileage is hardly ever driven and it has three places under the hood that have corrosion.

She bought this car in 2010 with 6,900 miles on it and it stays covered and has never been driven in bad weather since she has owned it.

I say it's caused by improper prepping and cleaning of the aluminum before painting.
