Temp Gauge - Outside Air

Has anyone else had an issue with the temperature gauge running way high? If I am in traffic the gauge reads anywhere from 105-120F. Obviously it is hot in Savannah, Ga but, not that hot.

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the external temp that reads out on the dash/radio?

If so mine does that randomly. I've chaulked it up to its possibly broken or haunted.

Mine read a 109 degrees when i turned the car on this morning. and i live in Michigan.

I think that they may pick up some heat radiated off the ground/asphalt. I have gotten a few weird readings, but always has gone back to normal pretty quick.

The sensor is mounted behind the lower grille and is picking up heat from the radiator.

That is what I was thinking. It is the internal radio reading.

you could check to be sure that the sensor hasnt fallen back near the radiator. mine reads right. located on the driver side of the lower grille.

I will look at that. The very first week that I owned it someone backed into me and the front end had to be repaired. I wonder if they put it back in the wrong spot or have it facing the wrong direction?

Does the exhaust from the vehicle in front of you effect the sensor as well?

I've noticed in traffic that a vehicle in front of me with rearward facing exhaust can heat the air that is being pulled by the radiator and heat exchanger on my car.

Its not a lot mind you, but I've noticed a two degree difference between me being first at the tree compared to me being on somebody's six in traffic.

Yes the traffic definitely does, even sitting a light without traffic. I have seen readings as high as 120F

I found mine just dangling after a front bumper repair, and it was reading very high on a sunny day. remounting it in the correct spot returned accuracy. It needs to be in the forward airstream and shielded from the pavement to give a good reading.

Well I found it yesterday. I had it up on a lift (getting new wheels/tires) and I asked if I could pull the cover off the front. What I found was the sensor was stuffed into the housing for the radiator. There wasn't any damage done. What troubles me is when I brought into Ford they said they could not find the problem. Which means they didn't even look being that it was so obvious.

Well moving it from being jammed under the radiator and to the correct position has fixed the issue.
