Steeda CAI - Installed - Impression
Steeda CAI - Installed - Impression
First, about the install...
- Install was about 2 hours all said and done.
- I wish the instructions mentioned something about the strut tower brace, so that I didn't have to come on here to ask about it.
- At least 75% of the time to install was assembling the new air box. I have to believe some of that could be done at the factory to save us time.
- The tuner took about 20 mins to do the tune. Probably nothing that can be done about it, but still kind of annoying.
- I wish the tuner let you select your tire size so that you didn't have to calculate out a specific revs-per-mile setting. I'm really not sure if my speedometer is off at this point.
The kit itself...
- Definitely high quality construction. All the welds are nice looking and machined well.
- All connections fit perfectly; all hardware provided worked fine.
And the results...
- Definitely feel the extra power.
- The intake has a much more prominent "sucking" sound. I like it, but I could see how some people might not.
So far very happy with the kit. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more seat time in the next few days to really feel the difference.

Here is an extremely handy website for doing all your tire size calculations and comparisons. It gives the revs per mile for any size tire as well as lots of other info.
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp
The time it takes to download a tune from the tuner to the cars pcm has to be because of how much more sophisticated the 2011 PCM is, takes way less time on older cars.

that's good you got your intake and tune installed,
I have a little over 3k on my car with this set up with no problems.I also noticed a performance increase after adding the CAI/tune.
I first set my Rev per mile at 740 because thats what the calculators gave me for 235/50/18 but I then checked the Pirelli website and the actual manufacture number is 761.9 so I made the change to 760 and my speedo is right on.
I know a lot of people dont bother setting this but I want my speedo and mileage to be accurate.
Just curious did you raise your rev limit and make adjutment for gear ratio?

STUPID QUESTION.
So this is not a plug and play where you send steeda your information, tires used, gears... and they plug in parameters and get it back to you. YOU MEAN I HAVE TO DO MATH??? Oh that's just swell!

When you do the tune dump, there are certain parameters in the tune that you have control over to customize the program to your car. You just step through the list. Any idiot can do it.
235/50R18 = 761.9 rpm
245/45R19 = 751 rpm
255/40R19 Pirelli = NA. Pirelli 245/40R19 OEM MB XL (763 rpm) is not the same as Ford Spec B.
255/40R19 Goodyear = NA
Experimenting with Engineering Diagnostic Mode using 3.5455 Gear Ratio (39/11) and rpm at 60.0 mph (Indicated) in 5th seems to indicate the Factory Setting for 235/50R18 is 757-758 rpm. Sorry thats as close as I could get without data logging capability.
PS On the SCT "Canned" Tune if you select "Stock" for Tire Rpm and Axle Ratio the SF3 should load the Settings for 235/50R18 and 3.31. You will need to specify if you have optional tires or gear. On a "Custom" Tune it should be written for your gears and tires.

Dont worry Eric it's real user friendly
I'm no Einstein and I did it with the greatest of ease.
I went to the actual manufacturers website for the tech info because even Tireracks numbers were a little off.Theres a lot of cool things about these newfangled Mustangs that even a old goat like me can learn.

Some people seem to get a little too worried about things like tire rpm for speedometer calibration. 761.9, 763, whatever, the difference is way less than 1% and won't even show on the speedometer and will barely register on the odometer. So long as you get it close you will be fine.

wonder how many do that for resale value?
