"ROUTE GUIDANCE FAILED"???

I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced a "ROUTE GUIDANCE FAILED" notice from the GPS. I just selected one of my addresses saved in the address book, but when it calculated the route, it came back with the message "Route Guidance Failed" and then went back the the regular map screen. Tried to erase the address from the address book and enter it "manually".. same result.

However, other destinations and addresses were calulated without problems. Seems to be only an issue with that particular location. Also tried a different location in the same city, but also came back with "ROUTE GUIDANCE FAILED"...

Any ideas???

Sounds like one of those places where "you can't get there from here"!

If you'll name the cities, perhaps we can check and see if ours give the same result (which I suspect they will). Perhaps the best way to workaround is to enter a waypoint somewhere along the way you expect to go and give it a push on how to do the route.

do they update the maps on their own or is that something you have to do yourself? Just wondering

No, you have to go online and download the latest version of sync.

The OP has the electronics package, which has the map data saved on a hard drive. In order to update the map data, you must buy a DVD from Navteq, the company that compiles the data. They come out with a new disc about once a year and it costs $200.

Well, I don't think many people are going to update it every year. Some people may never buy an update, and a lot of people will probably get an update every 3-4 years. Certainly Navteq could sell a whole lot more of these update DVD's if the price were cheaper.

Question so, when I update my sync online, it's not updating the map? Are you certain of this?

There are two ways to have navigation. The original poster has the Electronics Package, which means he's got the traditional built-in navigation, like I do. If you don't have EP, you can still get turn-by-turn directions through your phone and Sync. I haven't really researched this method, but my guess is that the map data isn't saved in your car or your phone at all. You're getting the data as you need it fresh from the computers that feed data to your phone, much like when you use Google Maps on your computer. At least that's my guess.

Map data in notoriously expensive. If the data is stored in the device and you are the one needing to update, it will almost always cost you $$$. I ordered the electronics package, but for some addresses, I am sure I will need to use my android phone. Google does not charge to update their maps, and so that can lead to newer data if you do not update. But I always try to either look at a map before I leave, or take one with me, just in case the GPD is wrong. I do travel all around the country for my job, and there is no one GPS device that will ever have everything right all the time. There still is no substitute for knowing how to read a map and familiarize yourself with the roads. In looking up addresses, I see them wrong so much that I do not worry about it. If it does not give the address right, I can set the GPS to a nearby location and just memorize the difference. I know of people who use the GPS to literally go across country and have no idea how to read a map. That is just asking for trouble IMO. Reading google turn by turn directions to travel long distances is just sad. Either way, if there is any doubt, I look it up twice before going just to not lose any more time. Even though they still get a lot of addresses wrong, setting the GPS to a nearby location, or manually setting it to the right area almost always works.

True

Its strange, i'll go into an area it doesn't know anything about and then in 5 seconds it will know all the streets and work perfect. Almost like it up-dates as i drive, which is ok to me.

Hello All,

I would recommend you to contact the Navigation Support Team at 1-800-392-3673 option 3 for technical assistance. They are able to help. This is also the same way you can access the SYNC Support Team.
