Rough in Drive-thru?

Hello, newbie to this forum and new owner of a 2011 5.0.

My question to other 5.0 owners is this: When you are in drive-thru (the bank, McDonalds, whatever), how does your car sound with the windows down?

Mine sounds like puke. It has a rough, lopey idle, and a sort of tick coming from the passenger side. In drive-thrus and my garage (with the windows down), everything is magnified. Out in the open, I notice it, but I doubt many others would. You don't hear any of it with the windows up.

My dealer service department gave me the "sounds like they all do" speech.

Other than this, I love everything about the car. I just passed 1000 miles, and the car pulls hard and looks great.

Most likely the tick you are hearing is the injectors. It is more pronounced next to a building with the windows down. I dont own a 11 model car but my 03 does the same thing.

Join the club dude. Same here. When i start the car in my garage it sounds like crap in idle. You are not alone. Lets see if anything can be done about it. Brenspeed said their car was on hold for a cold start problem and had to be reflashed. I wonder if these cars need this also. When was yours built?

Thanks. It's not the injectors -- I can hear those clearly when I raise the hood (and know what to listen for there). This sound seems to come from underneath the car or around the front wheels -- especially the passenger side. It is actually worse when the car is hot, so I doubt a cold start computer reflash would change anything.

When I pushed the dealer, they allegedly had a Ford rep listen to it, who also pronounced it normal. It's not bad or anything, I just can't imagine this is how Ford expects it's 5.0s to sound.

Car was built in May, if memory serves.

3v's have the same ticking sound... it's normal for the engine.

Get a louder exhaust, you'll never hear the ticking.

And the late April/early May cars were the ones on hold for "final inspection."

Just for giggles, check your coolant sticker too. And then look in the coolant bottle. See if the color recommendation matches the color in the bottle.

For all the rants about "Making these cars perfect" and "getting them right" . . . and the weeks-long hold, I don't think anything actually happened beyond some lot monkey staring at them and checking off a list.

Don't make me pull out the slash key on your ampersand.

My 2005 GTO with LS2 made these sounds that everyone is referring to. I will hopefully pick mine up today and compare.

Put some muffler deletes on it, then all you will hear is the lovely sound of a V-8 exhaust.

All I hear in my garage is my Stingers.....It's not a daily driver, but I crank it up daily just to hear the exhaust.

Well, unless the new mufflers are engineered to exit from the front wheel wells, its no going to completely overpower the engine sounds at idle -- and I have no issues with the engine sounds under throttle.

Besides, would like to know if this is a truly "normal" before I try to cover it up.

I haven't really noticed any rough idle, just goes to high idle first thing in the morning, then drops to about 800 RPM. I hear a slight tick when the hoods open, but its just the injectors on mine. And my muffler deletes do a pretty good job even at idle covering any engine noise.

Never said any system was 100%

All I was getting at is its easy for someone to beak about a procedure when they have no idea what's going on.
Case in point.

My car runs a little rough on cold start. I assumed it was the computer dialing everything in, probably compensating for the damned ethanol. Once warmed up, it idles smooth as silk.

I have good ears, but I can barely hear the injectors.

Seems normal to me from what I've heard, too.

How is that a case in point? The procedure included checking coolant stickers, and his has the wrong coolant sticker. Seems like he knows exactly what's going on.
