Road trip MPG test

Went on a little road trip on my '12 GT. Was interested on how high i could take the MPG . It's a manual with 2k miles on it. I haven't used the cruise control feature so I was looking forward to using that and driving the car as conservatively as I could to achieve the highest MPG possible. Well long story short it wasn't too long before the whole drive became one trip of paranoia of not getting pulled over by the police.

On a serious note: how often do you guys reset the AVG. MPG digital counter to get the most accurate reading. I've been stuck with16.6 MPG reading with mostly city-type driving?

I reset it when I gets under 14, baby it so it says like 25 and switch to another screen before it drops again. I got it to drop from 19 to 11 today in under 5 seconds.

If you want to know your true Avg MPG, then you reset it anytime you fill-up your car to full.

If you're doing a real MPG test, reset it after the car has warmed up, and right before you begin your testing.

If we're getting this picky, then refuel it at the same point on the guage each time, meaning refill at 1/2 full each time, or 1/4 full, etc. and fill it at the same time of the day (early morning or late in afternoon, and use the same pump.

There's a time when you just have to say "forget it", I didn't buy a Prius!

I use the odometer in the car plus the data from each fill-up and keep track of my mileage via an app on my phone to get the most accurate mileage as possible. I've been tracking that way since I bought the car 9 months ago, and I've never reset the in-car mileage tracker since the day I got it. The phone app and the car are within 5% of each other, so I can pretty confidently say the in-car mileage tracker is pretty darn good.

Why would you be paranoid about getting stopped by the cops while doing your MPG run???

I reset the fuel economy readout at every fill up, then use it to make sure my driving is getting the best mileage, if it starts to go down then I drive to make it go back up.

I also track every fill up, but don't have a "smart phone", have a small notebook.

I use www.fuelly.com to keep track of everything. I have three years of data from my Mazda Speed 3. Shows me the ave price per gallon for every year etc.... I make sure at every fill up after it clicks off I add another gallon to keep the stats as close as possible. I'm sure there's better ways but figured I'd add mine

How right you are Bucko. I haven't checked it, but I think the Wifey's will do 0-100 in approx. 4 seconds.

When the Ford engineers did the mileage challenge with the V6 Mustang at Bristol Speedway, they got the best mpg. at around 45-50 mph.

I don't have the patience to drive that slow on the highway with a Mustang!
